Make no mistake, the most exciting thing on the calendar this side of New Year is Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris. This season, Dior‘s grandiose offering is one of the first out of the gate, and Maria Grazia Chiuri is teasing another unforgettable show.
Inspired the blurred lines between the real and the surreal, the perception and imagination, the Dior Haute Couture SS25 show will reflect “on the moment of transition between childhood and adulthood and how this moment is represented in a transformation of what we wear.”
“The concept of the real and the surreal has long been at the heart of many artistic and literary works,” Ms. Chiuri wrote on her Instagram. “From the adventures of Alice in Wonderland to the Hunting of the Snark, the ‘nonsense poetry’ composed by Lewis Carroll embarked on the exploration of reality, as he crafted children’s stories which blurred the lines between perception and imagination.
“Surrealists artists in Paris, as they sought to compose their own literary pantheon, were drawn to the powerful childhood narratives of Carroll: Louis Aragon, with the support of Nancy Cunard, translated this work, while Dorothea Tanning and Max Ernst explored its eerie visual representations in paintings. The photographs of Anna Gaskell explore the psyche and emotions of her sitters in their state of in-between, on the cusp of adolescence, oscillating between fiction and reality, the dreamy and uncanny.”
