Ariana Grande is shutting down debates around her vocals after a recent interview clip went viral.

During a conversation with Penn Badgley for his podcast, Podcrushed, the singer’s voice drastically changed in cadence in a matter of seconds, quickly shifting from a casual, deeper voice to a higher-pitch mid-response. Naturally, fans were left confused and speculated and joked as to why she would dip int and out of range.

But seeing the clip garner negative attention on TikTok, Grande took it upon herself to set the record straight.

“habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health :),” she explained in the comments. “I intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing 😭”

She concluded with the claim that this is nothing new.

“I’ve always done this BYE,” she wrote.

While working tirelessly on the upcoming film adaptation of the hit musical Wicked for the past two years—in which Grande stars alongside Cynthia Erivo as Glinda, the Good Witch—the 30-year-old has openly talked about the strain so much singing is having on her voice.

“Prepping for the auditions was like six months—voice lessons every day, acting lessons every day,” she revealed on The Zach Sang Show in February of this year. “I trained every day… to transform my voice, even, like, my singing voice, everything about me… I had to deconstruct to prove to them I could handle taking on this other person.”

Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, has been in production for what feels like forever and will be released at the end of November.

In addition to all the singing she would be doing for the film, Grande also released a surprise album titled Eternal Sunshine.
