It’s not often those in the front row will raise their phones to capture almost every look that goes by on a runway, but at yesterday’s Supriya Lele show, they could barely resist.
Held on the final day of London Fashion Week, attendees arrived at the Old Selfridge’s Hotel eagerly anticipating Lele’s latest designs – in recent months, the Indian-British designer has become a firm favourite of the world’s most stylish celebrities, making her pieces almost impossible to come by (if anyone’s selling a pair of her trousers in blue or green please send them my way) and her show one of the city’s most highly anticipated.
But before the show even started, the room was abuzz: arriving just before the lights dimmed was none other than Victoria Beckham, who was quickly ushered to her seat beside model Jourdan Dunn and up-and-coming fashion It girl Mia Regan, who also happens to be dating Beckham’s second-eldest son, Romeo. Sitting a few people down from the group, too, was actress Chloe Cherry, Euphoria’s latest star, who’s been cementing herself in the fashion world since becoming an on-screen favourite in recent months.
Regan, who goes by Mimi Moocher online, and Dunn flanked Beckham in top-to-toe Supriya Lele with the stylish teen using the opportunity to create a TikTok video showcasing how she got ready for the show: a Supriya mesh skirt was paired with a light blue long-sleeve crop top, also by the designer, and then overlaid with one of the brand’s signature leather cut-out tops from spring/summer 2022. She paired the look with Miu Miu stomper boots, a khaki green Supriya trench coat and a shaggy lob. Dunn, meanwhile, opted for a blue Supriya dress and a brown long-sleeve top, also by brand.
Likely wearing her own designs, Beckham wore black cigarette trousers, white pumps and a black blazer for the surprise appearance at LFW. Beckham opted not to show her namesake label this season, but the gorgeous designer supporting designer moment prompted the question: did Regan alert her potential future step-mum of the coolest brand of the moment, or could Beckham be low-key working with Lele on a collaboration of sorts?
As for the runway, Lele has figured out her signature style: the way she creates draped dresses, cut-out designs that sit perfectly on the body, and pops of colour that you could pick as her designs from a mile away are much of what’s made her label so cult. For autumn/winter 2022, she stayed true to her roots, while adding new (sure-to-be-cult) additions, such as lavender lace mini skirts and pops of the same fabric through her low-rise trousers, which are back for the season (someone call Julia Fox) in black, bright red (give me) and kingfisher blue.
Other heroed colours in the collection include a chocolate brown, found on trousers, wrap skirts and button-up shirts, and a dusty pink found on cuffed pants, inspired by Indian pyjamas, and a leather puffer jacket.
Fittingly for the weather – London was battling severe storms all week long – Lele added a lot of outerwear to this collection, including the aforementioned puffer, a long leather coat and a black trench.
At Supriya’s last show there were cheers of ‘hot girl summer’ from the front row and despite this collection created for colder climates, these warm additions mean, similar to Regan’s layering, we can continue to wear Surpiya all year long, sun, storm or snow. Hot girl autumn here we come.
