Taylor Swift has been criticised in the past for a lack of public political engagement. But it seems she’s finally ready to speak out in support of causes she believes in.
The 29-year-old has urged her 120 million Instagram followers to write to their local representatives in support of the Equality Act, a law soon to go before the US Senate which would make discrimination against LGBTQ people illegal.
Swift shared a letter she wrote to her local representative in Tennessee urging him to support the bill, and explained to her followers why they should do the same.
“In excellent recent news, the House has passed the Equality Act, which would protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in their places of work, homes, schools, and other public accommodations,” Taylor wrote.
“The next step is that the bill will go before the Senate. I’ve decided to kick off Pride Month by writing a letter to one of my senators to explain how strongly I feel that the Equality Act should be passed. I urge you to write to your senators too.”
“Our country’s lack of protection for its own citizens ensures that LGBTQ people must live in fear that their lives could be turned upside down by an employer or landlord who is homophobic or transphobic,” she continued.
“The fact that, legally, some people are completely at the mercy of the hatred and bigotry of others is disgusting and unacceptable. Let’s show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly treat all of our citizens equally.”
The ME! singer recently explained that she’d previously been “reluctant” to voice her political opinions publicly, but that has changed “due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years.”
She says she now feels “informed enough to speak about [politics] to my 118 million followers.”
“Invoking racism and provoking fear through thinly veiled messaging is not what I want from our leaders,” she said.
“I’m going to do more to help. We have a big race coming up next year.”
