Researchers followed 5203 Chinese adults aged 80 and older, comparing 1459 people who eventually reached at least 100 with 3744 who died in their 80s or 90s.

Participants reported their usual eating pattern: omnivore, vegan, ovo-lacto vegetarian (includes eggs and dairy), or pesco-vegetarian (includes fish). The results, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, are observational. Translation: the study can spot patterns, but it cannot prove that any specific food caused someone to live longer.

The Major Twist: Age, Weight, And Protein

How Being Underweight Changes The Picture

Headlines focused on this: older women who ate meat were more likely to reach 100 than older women who were vegetarian. But when researchers dug deeper, the effect was concentrated in people who were underweight, with a body mass index (BMI) below 18.5.

Among those thin, very old adults, daily meat eaters had a roughly 44 percent higher chance of hitting 100 compared to vegetarians. In people with a normal or higher BMI, that “meat advantage” basically disappeared. In plain language, the problem was not vegetarianism itself – it was under-eating in bodies that were already running low on reserves.

Not All Vegetarian Diets Were Equal

The scare mostly applied to vegans and very restrictive patterns. Vegetarians who still ate fish, dairy, or eggs had a similar chance of reaching 100 as meat eaters. That points to nutrients rather than ideology. Older adults need enough protein, calories, and key vitamins and minerals to avoid sarcopenia, the age related loss of muscle that feeds frailty and falls.

Why This Does Not Make Meat A Miracle Longevity Drug

First, correlation is not causation. Some people may have gone vegetarian because they were already ill, had trouble chewing meat, or lost their appetite – all of which are linked to shorter life regardless of what is on the plate. The study also did not track how diets changed over decades, only in later life.

Second, context matters. The same paper mentions the “obesity paradox,” the surprising pattern that a bit of extra weight in very old age can be protective. That does not mean it is healthy to be significantly overweight at 40. Similarly, this study of Chinese adults aged 80 and older does not erase Western research, like Adventist Health Study-2, where vegetarians (especially those who ate fish) tended to have lower overall mortality.

It does not show meat is healthier than plants for everyone.

It does not apply to younger adults with different lifestyles.

It does not endorse processed meat; those foods are still linked to heart disease and cancer in many studies.

What This Means For Your Plate At Different Ages

If You Are Under 60

This study should not send you racing to a steakhouse. For younger and midlife adults, the strongest evidence still favors plant forward patterns like Mediterranean style eating: plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil, and modest amounts of animal foods. Think “less processed meat, more plants,” not “meat or plants, pick a side.”

If You Are 60 To 80

Your mission is to protect muscle and metabolic health. Whether you eat meat or not, aim for some protein at every meal: beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, yogurt, cheese, eggs, fish, or lean meats. Many geriatric nutrition experts now suggest about 1.0–1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day for older adults, paired with movement that challenges your muscles.

If You Are 80 Or Caring For Someone Who Is

This is where the Chinese data get real. Watch for red flags of undernutrition: unintended weight loss, clothes suddenly loose, low energy, or more frequent stumbles. For vegetarian or vegan elders, prioritize soft, easy to chew, calorie dense protein like smoothies with protein powder, Greek or fortified plant yogurt, tofu scrambles, creamy lentil soups with added oil, and nut butters if safe.

If weight keeps dropping or meals are tiny, it is reasonable to talk with a clinician or dietitian about whether adding eggs, dairy, or fish could help. For omnivores, focus on quality: more fish and poultry, fewer hot dogs and bacon, plenty of plants on the same plate.

The Takeaway Questions Everyone Is Asking

“I am a healthy weight vegetarian in my 70s. Should I panic?”
Probably not. In this study, the scary signal was in underweight people. If your weight is stable, you feel strong, and your diet includes enough protein, calcium, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, you are likely doing fine – though a check in with your doctor never hurts.

“Can I stay vegan and still age well?”
Yes, but the margin for error narrows as you get older. That means planning for adequate protein, fortified foods or supplements for B12 and vitamin D, and calorie dense meals if your appetite shrinks. Think of it less as a purity test and more as an ongoing, flexible nutrition strategy for the longest, strongest life you can comfortably live.

[2723
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v18.5 (Yoast SEO v20.4) -
