In Colti, a small village near the River Buzau in southeast Romania, an elderly woman kept a reddish “rock” by her door for years. She had reportedly found it in a stream bed, and it was heavy enough to do the job. After she died in 1991, a relative who inherited the house took a closer look and began to suspect it was something special. It was: a single piece of amber weighing about 3.5 kilograms, or 7.7 pounds, valued at around 1 million euros, roughly $1.1 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Doorstop to National Treasure<\/b><\/h2>\n

Experts at the Museum of History in Krakow, Poland, examined the piece and estimated it at roughly 38 to 70 million years old, formed from the resin of ancient trees. It is considered the largest piece of Romanian amber, known as rumanite, ever found.<\/span><\/p>\n

The relative sold it to the Romanian state, which classified it as a national treasure. Since 2022, it has been displayed at the Provincial Museum of Buzau. Its director, Daniel Costache, said the discovery has “a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level.”<\/span><\/p>\n
