For millions of viewers, few ever felt as real as the Ingalls family, gathered around a wooden table in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where a nickname, a nod and a long hug could carry a whole episode.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the heart of it were Charles Ingalls and his daughter Laura, known to everyone as Half-Pint. They were played by Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert on Little House on the Prairie, which ran from 1974 to 1983. On Oct. 31, 2026, what would have been Landon’s 90th birthday, Gilbert, now 62, shared rarely seen photos from the set on Instagram, along with a tribute to the man she still calls Pa.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You Weren’t My Father, but You Did Help Raise Me”<\/b><\/h2>\n

Her words were simple and direct. “You weren’t my father, but you did help raise me,” she wrote. “You taught me to be brave, to trust myself,” she added, along with finding humor in hard times and leading with her heart. Then came the line that stopped many longtime fans: “The little girl with the braids has silver in her hair now.”<\/span><\/p>\n

She signed off the way Laura always would have: “Happy birthday, Pa. I love you. Your Half-Pint.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1974, a Child Actor Met Her TV Dad<\/b><\/h2>\n

Gilbert was a child when the series began, and she grew up on camera alongside Landon, who was already a television star from his years as Little Joe on Bonanza. On Little House, he was the lead, a writer and a director. For a young actress spending long days on set, he became far more than a co-star, which is exactly what her tribute describes.<\/span><\/p>\n
