There is a five-minute fix for that. Picture this: you are finally in bed, the house is quiet, and your mind decides it is the perfect moment to remember the dentist, the birthday card, the email you forgot to send. Some people lie there rehearsing it all. Others keep a notepad on the nightstand and write it down before turning off the lamp. Science has a clear favorite.

Baylor University psychologist Michael Scullin and his colleagues tested this in a sleep lab. Their study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General in 2018, followed 57 healthy adults aged 18 to 30. “We live in a 24/7 culture in which our to-do lists seem to be constantly growing,” Scullin said, and the team wanted to know whether writing those lists down could quiet the mind at night.

Five Minutes, Two Kinds of Lists

The design was simple. Before bed, participants spent five minutes writing. Half wrote a to-do list for the next few days. The other half wrote about tasks they had already completed. Then the lights went out, with phones and homework off the table, and the researchers recorded their sleep overnight using polysomnography, the gold standard of sleep measurement.

The completed-tasks group was a clever control. It involved the same pen, the same paper and the same five minutes, so any difference had to come from what people wrote, not from the act of writing itself.

The To-Do Group Fell Asleep About Nine Minutes Faster

The result was clear. People who wrote a to-do list fell asleep, on average, about nine minutes faster than those who listed what they had already done. And the more specific the to-do list, the faster they drifted off. A vague “work stuff” helped less than “call the plumber, buy stamps, finish the report.”

Nine minutes might not sound like a revolution. For anyone who regularly stares at the ceiling, it is the difference between a frustrating night and a decent one. Not bad for a pen and a scrap of paper.

Why Writing It Down Works

“Most people just cycle through their to-do lists in their heads,” Scullin has said. Putting tasks on paper seems to offload them, so the brain no longer has to keep rehearsing them to avoid forgetting. It is the same logic that makes people who keep a paper calendar instead of a phone feel lighter in their heads.

The study has limits, and Scullin has been candid about them. The participants were healthy young adults tested on a weeknight in a lab. “We don’t know whether our findings would generalize to patients with insomnia,” he noted, and he has called for larger studies.

How to Try It Tonight

Keep a small notebook and a pen by the bed, not your phone, since screens are the last thing a tired brain needs. Set a five-minute limit. Write tomorrow’s tasks and the days after that, and be specific: names, times, exact errands. Then close the notebook and leave it closed. If sleep is a priority for you, you are in good company; Dakota Johnson calls it her number one priority. And if insomnia is a regular problem, talk to your doctor. The lesson worth borrowing is that what is on paper no longer has to be in your head.

The Bottom Line

People who write tomorrow’s to-do list before bed do fall asleep faster. In a Baylor sleep-lab study of 57 adults, five minutes of specific list-making cut the time to sleep by about nine minutes. The notebook does the worrying, so you don’t have to.

[2723

Psychology Says People Who Write Tomorrow's To-Do List Before Bed Fall Asleep Faster, and a Sleep-Lab Study Measured the Difference - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="Lights out, eyes closed, and your brain starts reading tomorrow’s agenda aloud.
