Your brain, it turns out, may be paying for it. Picture this: a new neighborhood, a dinner address and a phone at 3% battery. Some people panic. Others glance at the street signs, remember the bakery on the corner and simply find the place. If you are in the second group, you may have quietly kept a skill that a lot of people are losing.

In 2020, neuroscientists Louisa Dahmani and Véronique Bohbot of McGill University in Montreal published a study in the journal Scientific Reports on exactly this question. They tested 50 regular drivers, aged 19 to 35, on how well they could navigate without help. The result was clear: the more GPS someone had used over their lifetime, the worse their spatial memory when they had to find their own way.

What the Researchers Actually Measured

Participants worked through virtual navigation tasks, including a maze where they had to learn and remember where objects were. Heavy GPS users relied less on spatial memory strategies, drew less accurate mental maps and noticed and used fewer landmarks along the way.

The logic is simple. Finding your way normally means building a map in your head, which depends on the hippocampus, a brain region central to memory. As the authors put it, “Using GPS removes these requirements and renders navigation less cognitively demanding.” Convenient, yes. Free, perhaps not.

Three Years Later, the Gap Had Grown

The researchers then managed to retest 13 of the participants about three years later. Among them, greater GPS use over that period was linked to a steeper decline in the kind of spatial memory that relies on the hippocampus.

They also checked an obvious objection: maybe people with a poor sense of direction simply use GPS more. They found no link between lifetime GPS use and how good people said their sense of direction was. That makes the reverse explanation less likely, although it does not rule it out.

Which Navigator Are You?

The Landmark Collectors remember the church spire, the red door, the pharmacy on the corner. The Mental Mappers picture the route from above before leaving home. The Wanderers enjoy getting slightly lost, because that is how a city finally makes sense. All three are doing what heavy GPS users skip: actively building a map.

The Limits, and How to Keep the Skill

The study has real limits, and the authors say so. The sample was small, especially at follow-up, the participants were young adults rather than people over 50, and the data show an association rather than proof. They caution that “spurious correlations are possible” and call for larger studies.

Still, you do not need to throw away your phone to protect the habit. Look at the route before you leave, then try the first part without the voice. On familiar trips, switch GPS off entirely. Pick two or three landmarks and say them out loud as you pass. Use the app as a safety net, not a guide dog. The lesson worth borrowing is that a skill you use is a skill you keep, just like writing by hand for your memory. Even the simple act of walking with your hands behind your back says something about how we think on the move.

The Bottom Line

People who still find their way without GPS are not being stubborn. In a McGill study of 50 drivers, they showed sharper spatial memory, and the heaviest GPS users declined faster over about three years. The blue dot can stay in your pocket a little more often.

[2723

Psychology Says People Who Still Find Their Way Without GPS Often Have a Sharper Spatial Memory, and Heavy GPS Users Declined Faster Over 3 Years - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="The blue dot is wonderfully convenient.
