A teenager, a 45-minute flight and almost nothing in his suitcase. The rest of the story is one of the most famous start-ups in history.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Every big company has a founding myth, and most of them start in a garage. This one starts earlier, in an airport in Havana, with a boy whose parents were not allowed to walk him to the gate.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

His name was Miguel “Mike” Bezos. On July 21, 1962, at 16, he left Cuba alone, without speaking a word of English, as part of Operation Pedro Pan, the program that flew Cuban children to the United States. “My parents were not allowed to go into the airport with me, so they dropped me off,” he later recalled. “I got on an airplane and landed in Miami 45 minutes later.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Three Shirts and a Handmade Jacket<\/b><\/h2>\n

His son Jeff has listed exactly what came with him: three shirts, three pairs of pants, one pair of shoes and a handmade jacket “that is now a family heirloom.” That was the whole wardrobe.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was first housed at Camp Matecumbe in Florida with about 400 other Cuban refugee children. Around three weeks later, he was sent to Wilmington, Delaware, to attend Salesianum School, living in housing run by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. He graduated from high school at 17.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Night School to a Family of Three<\/b><\/h2>\n

A scholarship took him to the University of Albuquerque in New Mexico, where he started in mechanical engineering before switching to computer science. At night school, he met Jackie Gise, a young mother raising a little boy named Jeff. They married in April 1968, and Mike adopted Jeff, then 4, who took his surname.<\/span><\/p>\n

That fall, after graduating, Mike joined Exxon in Houston. He stayed for 32 years, while he and Jackie raised three children. A refugee with three shirts had become, quietly, the most stable figure in a future billionaire’s childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n

1995: The Check That Changed Everything<\/b><\/h2>\n

In 1994, Jeff founded a small online bookstore in a rented garage in Bellevue, Washington. A year later, Mike and Jackie put $245,573 into their son’s start-up, reportedly in exchange for a stake of about 6%. The company was Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was not a sure bet: the company was barely a year old. His parents invested anyway, in him more than in the internet. Few family checks have aged better.<\/span><\/p>\n

What the Story Still Says<\/b><\/h2>\n

Mike and Jackie went on to co-found the Bezos Family Foundation. Jackie, his wife of more than 57 years, died in August 2025, and Mike became the foundation’s sole chair.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story works because it is not about money first. It is about parents who let go, as every parent eventually must (Kate Middleton put it beautifully when <\/span>Prince George left for Eton<\/span><\/a>), and about a son who got the same trust back decades later. Like the stars of <\/span>Charlie’s Angels<\/span><\/a>, it only makes full sense with the years in between.<\/span><\/p>\n
