Liam Neeson, 74, Doesn’t Go to a Gym at All, Yet Says He Can Still Do His Own Fight Scenes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

He still throws his own punches on screen at 74. What keeps him ready is far less cinematic than a gym membership.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Hollywood has a fixed idea of an action hero’s week: early alarms, heavy weights, a trainer with a stopwatch. Then the heroes got older, the films kept coming, and a few of them quietly rewrote the rules.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Liam Neeson<\/span><\/a> is the clearest case. Since <\/span>Taken<\/span><\/a> grossed $223.9 million worldwide in 2008, he has built a second career out of men with a very particular set of skills. He turned 74 on June 7, and his new thriller, The Mongoose, opened in US theaters on Oct. 30. In an Oct. 31 interview promoting the film, he was refreshingly blunt: “No, I don’t go to a gym at all.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Reasonably Fit” Is the Whole Plan<\/b><\/h2>\n

“You don’t have to spend two hours in the gym every day,” he said. “I used to, many years ago, but I keep reasonably fit.” His logic is professional, not vain: a lead owes the production a level of fitness. When a script arrives with action sequences, he simply turns the dial up. “I’ll increase my physical workout activity a little bit.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in his career, Neeson talked about keeping his own gym and a punching bag at home. Today the routine is lighter, steadier and, by his own account, enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why He Still Does His Own Fights, “Up to a Point”<\/b><\/h2>\n

The fights are the part he refuses to hand over. “I like doing my own fights. I can still do them up to a point,” he said. The heavy-duty stunts have long gone to Mark Vanselow, his stunt double since the late 1990s, who makes his feature directing debut with The Mongoose. By Neeson’s count, it is their 30th project together.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ring is not new territory either. Neeson started boxing lessons at nine at a youth club in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, and won several regional titles before quitting at 17. Footwork, it seems, is hard to forget.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Daily Habit Has Science Behind It<\/b><\/h2>\n

Asked what has changed with age, he pointed to something almost anyone can copy. “Should it just be a walk every day, you know what I mean?” he said. “I’m 74 years of age, and I’m so lucky to occasionally still get offered this type of role.” (We looked at <\/span>his walking habit here<\/span><\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

The LIFE study, the largest randomized trial of physical activity in older adults, followed 1,635 sedentary men and women aged 70 to 89. Led by Marco Pahor of the University of Florida and published in JAMA in 2014, it used walking as the backbone, plus short strength, balance and flexibility sessions. After an average of 2.6 years, that group cut its risk of major mobility disability by 18%.<\/span><\/p>\n

For women, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital study of 16,741 women with an average age of 72 is just as encouraging. Those taking about 4,400 steps a day had a 41% lower risk of death than those taking 2,700, with the benefit leveling off around 7,500 steps. “Clearly, even a modest number of steps was related to lower mortality rate among these older women,” said lead author I-Min Lee. It shows an association, not proof.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to Borrow His Approach<\/b><\/h2>\n

Make the walk your base, not your bonus: every day, at a pace where you could still hold a conversation. Then plan for your own “action scenes.” A hiking trip, a move or a week with the grandchildren deserves a little extra preparation, exactly as Neeson does before a shoot. To go further, copy the LIFE recipe and add 10 minutes of strength work and 10 of balance a few times a week. The lesson worth borrowing is consistency over intensity. The Bottom Line<\/b><\/h2>\n

No gym, no superhero regime: a daily walk, a baseline of “reasonably fit” and a little extra when the role demands it.
