At 51, while most Hollywood A-listers are busy adding square footage in Beverly Hills, Angelina Jolie is fussing over a very different kind of real estate: a 39-hectare patch of Cambodian forest that used to be littered with landmines and poachers\u2019 snares. Think less infinity pool, more ranger station.<\/p>\n
The estate, tucked into Battambang province near the Thai border, has become the front porch to one of Southeast Asia\u2019s more ambitious conservation experiments. From that private base, Jolie\u2019s Maddox Foundation helps protect a public forest roughly 1,500 times larger \u2013 a landscape about the size of Chicago \u2013 while trying to keep both endangered wildlife and 57,000 human neighbors alive and thriving.<\/p>\n
Jolie did not randomly drop a pin on Cambodia. At the start of the 2000s, she flew in to film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider<\/i> among the temples of Angkor. The trip was supposed to be an action-movie backdrop; instead, it rewired her life. Confronted with the aftershocks of war, poverty and unexploded landmines, she left with more than a box-office hit.<\/p>\n
Within a year of that shoot, Jolie was appointed a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, and in 2002 she adopted Maddox, a baby boy from Cambodia. The country stopped being an exotic location and became family. By 2003, she was looking for a way to anchor Maddox in his birth culture that did not involve five-star hotels and tourists with selfie sticks.<\/p>\n
Her answer was a traditional wooden house on stilts set in about 39 hectares of land in the Samlaut district of Battambang. That is roughly 96 acres \u2013 picture about 70 football fields of forest and farmland. Remote, green, and at the time, deeply scarred.<\/p>\n
When Jolie bought the property in 2003, the surrounding Samlaut area was still riddled with landmines from decades of conflict. Forests were being chipped away by illegal logging, while poachers and wildlife traffickers targeted everything from birds to pangolins. The house was meant as a refuge for her family, but it sat on the front line of a slow-motion environmental collapse.<\/p>\n
Rather than fence herself off from that reality, Jolie leaned in. In 2003, she launched the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation, now simply the Maddox Foundation, using the 39-hectare estate as a base. The first priorities were basic: clearing mines, supporting rural schools, digging wells, making sure local kids could reach a classroom without risking their lives.<\/p>\n
Very quickly, it became obvious that you cannot fix community life if the forest everyone depends on is vanishing. The foundation expanded its work into conservation, partnering with Cambodia\u2019s Ministry of Environment to help protect the Samlaut Multiple Use Area \u2013 a 60,994-hectare protected zone that spills across Battambang and neighboring Pailin. That is about 150,720 acres, or roughly Chicago-sized, compared to Jolie\u2019s 96-acre slice.<\/p>\n
Today the foundation says more than 40,000 hectares inside that wider forest are under active conservation programs, linking the actress\u2019s relatively modest estate to a landscape-level project that is far bigger than any celebrity compound.<\/p>\n
The Maddox Foundation funds and trains local rangers drawn from nearby villages to patrol the forest, pull out snares, stop illegal logging and monitor wildlife. In 2016, those rangers were formally recognized as government agents under Cambodia\u2019s Ministry of Environment \u2013 a technical detail that quietly matters, because it turns a celebrity-backed project into part of the state\u2019s own enforcement muscle.<\/p>\n
The results are measurable. In 2025 alone, patrols removed about 7,800 meters of wire snares from the Samlaut forest. Camera traps have logged at least 44 vertebrate species, including Asian elephants, dholes and critically endangered Sunda pangolins. To reduce the pressure to poach in the first place, the foundation supports beekeeping and more sustainable farming, so households have extra income that does not require selling wildlife to traffickers.<\/p>\n
Samlaut sits on the fringe of the Cardamom Mountains, part of a critical forest corridor in mainland Southeast Asia. In a region where lowland forests have been shredded by plantations and development, it is one of the last big strongholds for wide-ranging species like Asian elephants. Protecting a single elephant family here means guarding water sources, carbon storage and habitats that ripple far beyond one red-listed mammal.<\/p>\n
Conservation is not happening in some empty, postcard-perfect wilderness. Roughly 57,000 people live in and around the protected area across six communes. The Maddox Foundation backs schools, health centers and clean water systems that now serve tens of thousands of those residents each year.
