You know that moment when you peel off your jeans after a long day, sniff them suspiciously, and wonder if they can survive one more wear? Victoria Beckham has an answer. It is just not the one your mother gave you.<\/p>\n

At 52, the designer, former Spice Girl and lifetime denim devotee has admitted that she basically does not wash her jeans. As in: they meet the washing machine only under extreme circumstances, and even then they get the gentlest treatment possible. The internet clutched its pearls. Denim nerds quietly nodded.<\/p>\n

What Victoria Beckham Actually Said About Washing Her Jeans<\/h2>\n

Beckham explained that her go\u2011to pairs rarely see soap and water. Her logic is simple: frequent washing wrecks the fit and fades the color she spent years perfecting.<\/p>\n

“I do not wash them,” Beckham says. “If the kids spill something on them, then obviously I have to wash them, but it would only ever be on a cold wash.” The rest of the time, she hangs them up to air and lets the fabric recover between outings. For someone who has lived through every era of denim, from low rise to puddle\u2011hem, she treats jeans less like basics and more like collectibles.<\/p>\n

Beckham\u2019s line echoes a much older denim controversy. Back in 2014, then Levi Strauss & Co. chief Chip Bergh said he had a pair of jeans that had not seen a washing machine in more than a year, sparking breathless headlines that he never washed his denim. He later clarified on CNBC that he was pushing people to wash less and avoid harsh machine cycles, not to live in dirty pants forever.<\/p>\n

Put a celebrity designer on top of that history and you have the perfect storm: our collective anxiety about smelling weird, ruining expensive jeans and destroying the planet, all rolled into one viral sound bite.<\/p>\n

Do You Really Need To Wash Jeans Less?<\/h2>\n

On one thing, experts and Beckham agree: jeans do not belong in the same laundry category as gym leggings or white T\u2011shirts. Denim is a tightly woven cotton that can handle multiple wears. American cleaning expert Scott Schrader points out that the fabric does not soak up sweat the way thinner knits do.<\/p>\n

“Denim is very durable,” Schrader says. He suggests most people can wash their jeans every four to six wears, as long as they are not visibly dirty or smelly, and simply air them out or spot\u2011clean small marks in between. Levi\u2019s consumer guidance goes even further, suggesting roughly once every 10 wears, turned inside out<\/a> and washed in cold water, to save both the color and a lot of water and energy.<\/p>\n

So Beckham\u2019s routine is not totally unhinged. It is just the extreme end of a spectrum many denim brands quietly encourage.<\/p>\n

How Over Washing Damages Denim<\/h2>\n

Every trip through the machine is a tiny assault on your jeans. Water swells the cotton fibers. Detergent strips dye. The drum\u2019s friction roughs up the surface. You see the damage as premature fading at the thighs and knees, sagging knees, a waistband that never quite lies flat again.<\/p>\n

If your jeans have elastane mixed in for stretch, hot water and high heat are especially brutal, snapping the elastic and leaving you with baggy, sad denim that will not bounce back. Stretch skinnies that mysteriously lose their shape after a season? Blame overzealous washing more than the brand.<\/p>\n

So How Often Should You Actually Wash Your Jeans<\/h2>\n

Think of Beckham, Schrader and Levi\u2019s as three points on a triangle. The sweet spot for most women sits in the middle. As a practical rule of thumb:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Light office or dinner wear: wash every five to 10 wears.<\/li>\n
  • Errands, commuting and city life: every three to six wears.<\/li>\n
  • Heavy sweating, outdoor work or festivals: every one to three wears.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    More important than counting wears is paying attention. If there is a visible stain, odor, or the fabric feels grimy, it is laundry day, whatever Victoria is doing in her London dressing room.<\/p>\n

    How To Wash Jeans Like A Stylist<\/h2>\n

    When your jeans do earn a bath, treat them the way Beckham treats hers on that rare cold\u2011wash day. Turn them inside out to protect the indigo and hardware. Use cold water on a gentle cycle with a small amount of mild detergent. Skip fabric softener, which can build up on fibers and make them feel stiff.<\/p>\n

    Once they are clean, resist the dryer. Heat is the enemy of both cotton and stretch. Instead, smooth the seams, reshape the legs and hang them to air\u2011dry. For small spills between washes, blot with a damp cloth and a dot of soap, then rinse the spot and let it dry.
