Research suggests very few of us do, and the questions we ask may be the reason. Ask a room full of people whether they are self-aware, and almost every hand will go up. We like to think we understand our strengths, our weaknesses and how we come across to others. According to one psychologist, that confidence is mostly misplaced.

Her research suggests that truly self-aware people are rare, and that what sets them apart comes down to a single word.

The Self-Awareness Gap

Organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich, author of the bestselling book Insight, has spent years studying self-awareness. Her research found that about 95 percent of people believe they are self-aware, but only around 10 to 15 percent actually are.

The gap has real consequences. Her research also found that 74 percent of people work with at least three colleagues who lack self-awareness, a reminder of how often it shapes everyday relationships at work and at home.

Two Kinds of Self-Awareness

Eurich distinguishes between two dimensions. Internal self-awareness is knowing your own values, passions, reactions and goals. External self-awareness is understanding how other people see you. The two do not always go together: someone can be deeply reflective but have no idea how they come across, and the reverse is also true.

Why Asking “Why” Can Backfire

The most surprising finding concerns introspection. You might expect that people who spend the most time reflecting on themselves would be the most self-aware. Eurich’s research suggests the opposite.

People who frequently ask themselves “why,” as in “Why do I feel this way?” or “Why did I react like that?”, tend to be less self-aware and more anxious. The problem is that “why” questions often lead to rumination. We rarely have access to the true causes of our feelings, so we invent explanations, focus on what is wrong and get stuck in negative loops.

The Power of “What”

Truly self-aware people tend to ask “what” instead. “What am I feeling right now?” “What situations make me feel this way?” “What can I do differently next time?”

“What” questions keep the focus on facts and solutions rather than blame. Eurich gives a simple example: instead of asking “Why do you want to change your job?”, ask “What do you like about what you’re doing?” The first invites self-doubt, the second opens up possibilities.

How to Use the “What” Habit

The next time you feel frustrated or anxious, pause and swap your question. Replace “Why am I so upset?” with “What am I feeling, and what triggered it?” Then ask, “What would help right now?”

To build external self-awareness, ask for honest feedback from a few trusted people who want you to succeed, and listen without defending yourself. A short journaling habit that focuses on what happened and what you learned, rather than why, can also help.

Over time, these small shifts make reflection more useful and less exhausting.

The Bottom Line

Only 10 to 15 percent of people are truly self-aware, and according to Tasha Eurich, it comes down to one word. Stop asking “why,” start asking “what,” and you may learn more about yourself than years of overthinking ever could.

[2723

Only 10% to 15% of People Are Truly Self-Aware, and a Psychologist Says It Comes Down to One Word - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="Most of us believe we know ourselves well.
