A few tiny flies circle the bananas, you toss the overripe fruit, and two days later they are back. It feels like they appear from nowhere.

They do not. According to entomologists, the fruit bowl is often not the real problem at all.

Why Fruit Flies Keep Coming Back

Fruit flies multiply astonishingly fast. A female can lay about 500 eggs when given the opportunity, and the life cycle from egg to adult can take about a week, according to a fact sheet by Michael F. Potter, an extension entomologist at the University of Kentucky.

That means a small problem can turn into a large one in days, and that throwing out fruit only removes one possible food source. If eggs and larvae are developing elsewhere, the cycle continues.

The Hidden Breeding Spots

All fruit flies need, Potter explains, is a moist film of fermenting material. That can be found in places most people never think to clean.

Kitchen sink drains and garbage disposals are top suspects. So are trash cans, especially the lid and the bottom, and recycling bins full of bottles and cans with a few drops of juice, soda, beer or wine left inside. Mops, sponges and damp cleaning rags can host them too, along with spills under the refrigerator.

“Unless the breeding sites are removed or cleaned, the problem will continue no matter how often insecticides are applied,” Potter writes.

How to Find Out If Your Drain Is the Source

Potter suggests a simple overnight test: tape a clear plastic food storage bag over the drain or disposal opening. If adults emerge, they will be trapped inside the bag by morning.

If the flies you catch look fuzzy, with broad, moth-like wings held flat over the body, you may be dealing with drain flies instead. Jennifer Snyder of the Oregon State University IPM Program recommends covering the drain with clear packing tape, sticky side down, overnight. Flies stuck to the tape the next day suggest they are breeding in the drain.

Why Scrubbing Beats Pouring

Drain fly larvae live in the slime layer that builds up inside pipes. According to Snyder, pouring harsh cleaners down the drain occasionally is not enough, because larvae retreat into that layer. Instead, scrub the inside of the drain with a stiff, long-handled brush, alone or with a biological drain cleaner applied at the end of the day and left overnight. Spraying adult flies does little if the source stays in place.

The Kitchen Reset

Start with drains and the disposal: scrub them, then run hot water. Empty and rinse recycling, and wash bins with hot, soapy water. Replace sponges often, and let cloths and mops dry completely. Check under appliances for old spills.

Then deal with the fruit. Keep ripe produce in the refrigerator, and to catch remaining adults, Potter suggests a jar with a few ounces of cider vinegar and a paper funnel rolled and placed in the opening.

Goodbye fruit flies. Clean the drains, bins and cloths first, and the fruit bowl stops being a battlefield.

[6939

Goodbye Fruit Flies: The Kitchen Spots Entomologists Say to Clean Before the Fruit Bowl - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="The fruit bowl gets the blame, but drains, bins and damp cloths are often where the next generation is growing. Every fall, the same scene plays out in kitchens across the country.
