It is not the color that ages the eye. It is the finish, and where you put it.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Most of us choose eyeshadow by color: a warm bronze for fall, a soft taupe for the office, a little gold for a party. After 50, though, the shade matters less than something we rarely think about. The finish of the formula can make the eyes look fresh and lifted, or tired and creased, before anyone notices the color at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The culprit is frost, and above all frost swept across the entire lid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Shimmer Works Against Mature Lids<\/b><\/h2>\n

With age, eyelid skin<\/a><\/strong> becomes thinner, drier and less elastic. “Crepey lids have lost their collagen and elasticity, have more fine lines and are looser,” explains makeup artist Ren\u00e9e Loiz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shimmer and frost are made of light-reflecting particles. On smooth skin, they look luminous. On textured skin, they catch the light on every fold and line, and they can make a lid that has started to droop look puffier. “Shimmer and frosted eye shadows should be used sparingly on the eyes as they have the tendency to accentuate texture,” says makeup artist Elaina Badro.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chunky glitter is the most unforgiving of all. Rose-Marie Swift, the makeup artist who founded RMS Beauty, warns that glitter tends to highlight texture after 50, as do cool silvers and harsh metallics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Matte and Satin Are the New Base<\/b><\/h2>\n

The solution is not to give up light altogether, but to change the texture of the base. “Using a more matte texture lays more evenly on the lids,” Loiz says. Swift agrees that matte “can be very nice on an older eye because it gives a clean, soft-focus look.”<\/span><\/p>\n

There is one exception: dry, powdery mattes. “A lot of older women already have dry eyelids, so a powdery matte isn’t always the best choice,” Swift notes. That is why many artists now favor satin finishes, which have a soft sheen without visible sparkle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cream Formulas Are the Secret<\/b><\/h2>\n

Texture is the other half of the equation. “My recommendation for mature skin is cream or cream-to-powder shadows,” says makeup artist Gregory Arlt. “Using a cream tends to be more forgiving to wrinkles, crepey skin or textured lids.” Makeup artist Alexandria Gilleo adds that cream formulas “won’t settle into fine lines like powder can.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Where Shimmer Still Belongs<\/b><\/h2>\n

You do not have to banish sparkle. The trick is placement. “Matte shades create depth and definition, while shimmer brings light to the center of the lid and inner corners,” says makeup artist Tonya Riner. Swift’s go-to formula is the same: “A matte base with a touch of light-reflecting shadow in the center of the lid is the best of both worlds.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Not every artist rejects shimmer entirely. Some find that a sheer, finely milled shimmer can blur lines rather than emphasize them. The common thread is restraint: a fine sheen in one spot, never a frosted sweep from lash line to brow.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to Do It at Home<\/b><\/h2>\n

Start with a satin or matte cream<\/a><\/strong> shadow in a warm neutral such as taupe, soft brown or rosy beige, and blend it over the lid with your fingertip. Swift prefers fingers for creams “because you get better control and blending.” Tap rather than swipe, so you do not drag delicate skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Add a slightly deeper matte shade in the crease for definition. Finish with a dot of soft champagne or gold shimmer in the center of the lid or the inner corner only. If your lids are very dry, apply a thin layer of moisturizer or balm first and let it absorb.<\/span><\/p>\n

After 50, frosted eyeshadow across the whole lid may be quietly making your eyes look older.
