A new study from Johns Hopkins suggests it may also be worth paying attention to, not because napping harms the brain, but because frequent daytime sleepiness could be an early signal that something is changing.

The research, published online on October 5 in The Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, followed nearly 1,000 older adults for up to a decade.

What the Researchers Studied

The team at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health analyzed data from 995 Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older taking part in the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a nationally representative survey. None had dementia when the study began in 2013. Participants reported how often they napped, how long and whether they meant to.

The Key Findings

Compared with people who rarely or never napped, those who napped most days or every day had a 48 percent higher risk of developing dementia. People who fell asleep without planning to had a 39 percent higher risk. Even short naps, of 30 minutes or less, were linked to a 40 percent higher risk.

Longer naps were no longer clearly linked to dementia once nighttime sleep was taken into account. And when the researchers excluded dementia cases diagnosed in the first five years, the links with frequent and unintentional napping remained similar.

A Marker, Not Necessarily a Cause

The authors are careful about what this means. “More frequent napping could be a marker of changes in the brain,” said senior author Adam Spira, a professor in the Department of Mental Health. Early brain changes linked to dementia may affect the systems that keep us awake, making people sleepier during the day.

“Monitoring napping behaviors could serve as an early and accessible marker,” added first author Kening Jiang, a postdoctoral fellow.

The study has limits. It is observational, so it cannot prove that napping causes dementia. Napping was self-reported, and dementia status came from a validated classification rather than a clinical diagnosis.

When to Talk to a Doctor

An occasional nap is not a cause for concern. What may deserve a conversation is a change: starting to nap most days when you did not before, dozing off unintentionally while reading or watching TV, or feeling sleepy during the day despite a full night in bed. Daytime sleepiness can also point to other treatable issues, such as sleep apnea, medication side effects or depression.

Night Habits That Reduce the Need to Nap

Better nights often mean fewer naps. Keep regular sleep and wake times, even on weekends. Get outdoor light in the morning, and stay physically active during the day. Limit caffeine after midday and alcohol in the evening, which disrupts sleep. Keep the bedroom cool, dark and quiet. If you snore loudly or wake up tired, ask about a sleep evaluation.

If you do nap, keep it short and early in the afternoon, so it does not interfere with nighttime sleep.

Johns Hopkins researchers say one common daytime habit could be an early sign of dementia. For people over 65, noticing changes in napping may be a simple way to start an important conversation.

[2723

Johns Hopkins Researchers Say One Common Daytime Habit Could Be An Early Sign Of Dementia, And Many People Over 65 Do It Most Days - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="A decade-long study of older Americans links frequent daytime dozing to a higher risk of dementia, but not necessarily as a cause. For many people over 65, an afternoon nap is a small daily pleasure.
