You spray, you wipe, and as soon as the light hits the glass, there they are: streaks, smudges and a faint cloudy film. Often, the problem is not your effort but the residue left behind by fingerprints, cooking grease and previous cleaners.<\/span><\/p>\n

A popular homemade fix uses an ingredient you would not expect to find in a cleaning cupboard: cornstarch.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Recipe<\/b><\/h2>\n

The version shared by consumer columnist Mary Hunt in her Everyday Cheapskate column calls for four ingredients:<\/span><\/p>\n

1\/4 cup rubbing alcohol<\/a><\/strong> (isopropyl alcohol), 1\/4 cup white vinegar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 2 cups warm water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pour everything into a standard spray bottle, attach the sprayer and shake well. The recipe makes about 20 ounces. For a smaller batch, The Gardening Cook suggests 2 tablespoons each of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar, 1 1\/2 teaspoons of cornstarch and 1 cup of water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Each Ingredient Matters<\/b><\/h2>\n

Cornstarch is the secret. Its particles are so fine that they act as a very soft scrubbing agent, Hunt explains, lifting dried-on grime and greasy film without scratching the glass or leaving residue.<\/span><\/p>\n

White vinegar helps cut through dirt and grime. Rubbing alcohol makes the solution evaporate quickly, which is key for a streak-free finish. The Gardening Cook notes that vinegar and water alone left her windows streaky, and that the alcohol solved it. Warm water helps the cornstarch disperse evenly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choose the Right Moment<\/b><\/h2>\n

Timing makes a real difference. Clean your windows on a cloudy day or when the glass is in the shade. In direct sun, the solution dries before you can wipe it away, and that is exactly what creates streaks.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Microfiber Method<\/b><\/h2>\n

Spray lightly. Too much liquid only gives you more to remove. Wipe with a clean microfiber cloth, working from top to bottom, then buff the glass with a second dry microfiber cloth until no moisture remains. Hunt also mentions coffee filters or newspaper as lint-free alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

For large windows, a squeegee works well: pull it down in overlapping strokes and wipe the blade after each pass.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mistake That Clogs the Bottle<\/b><\/h2>\n

Cornstarch settles at the bottom between uses. If you skip shaking, you will spray mostly liquid at first, then a thicker mix that can block the nozzle. Shake the bottle well before every use, and between sprays during a long session. Hunt notes the cornstarch is fine enough that a good shake keeps it from clogging the sprayer. Avoid adding extra cornstarch, which can leave a white haze.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where Not to Use It<\/b><\/h2>\n

Keep it on glass and mirrors<\/a><\/strong>. Hunt warns against using it on granite or marble, since vinegar can damage the sealant over time and leave the stone dull and sticky. Label the bottle clearly, store it out of children’s reach, and never mix vinegar with bleach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mixing cornstarch and white vinegar to clean windows sounds unusual, but it works because each ingredient does a precise job.
