Bare ears, simple gold rings and one watch with a very special history.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Nearly nine years after their first public outing as an engaged couple, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle went back to where it all began. On October 15, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to Nottingham for their first joint public engagement since moving back to the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fans quickly noticed what Meghan, 45, was not wearing. Her diamond engagement ring stayed at home, and so did her earrings. But one accessory on her wrist told a story of its own.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Return to Where It Started<\/b><\/h2>\n

Nottingham holds a special place in the couple’s history. On December 1, 2017, just days after announcing their engagement, they made their first official joint appearance there. This time, they spent the day with local charities, starting at the Community Recording Studio<\/a><\/strong> in St Ann’s, a music and creative skills charity for young people, before visiting the Himmah Hub food project in Hyson Green and the youth charity Epic Partners, according to What Meghan Wore.<\/span><\/p>\n

The visit came two months after reports, first published by The Telegraph and confirmed by ABC News, that the family planned to settle near London as private citizens, not working royals.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jewelry She Chose<\/b><\/h2>\n

Meghan kept her jewelry deliberately pared back. She wore her Welsh gold wedding band, another gold band and an Aura ring under a diamond-studded gold cover by California designer Logan Hollowell, Marie Claire reports. What Meghan Wore also spotted an Oura smart ring.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jewelry expert Nilesh Rakholia, founder of the British jeweler Abelini, told Marie Claire that skipping earrings “is a real decision.” “To me, this shows that what you choose not to wear can say as much as what you do,” he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not the first time this year she has gone without her engagement ring. In March, at a gala in Beverly Hills, she also wore only her wedding band, InStyle noted.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Watch That Belonged to Diana<\/b><\/h2>\n

The most meaningful piece was on her wrist: a gold Cartier Tank watch that belonged to Princess Diana. Diana helped popularize the Tank Fran\u00e7aise after its release in 1996, according to InStyle, and wore the model often.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meghan first wore the watch publicly in 2020, for her Time portrait, and it has since become one of her signature pieces. Harry gave it to her, keeping a piece of his mother close. In his 2017 engagement interview, he spoke of wanting Diana to be “with us on this crazy journey together.” Two diamonds from Diana’s collection also sit on either side of the center stone of Meghan’s engagement ring, which Harry designed.<\/span><\/p>\n

An Outfit That Echoes 2017<\/b><\/h2>\n

Her look also nodded to that first Nottingham visit, HELLO! observed. In 2017, she wore a navy Mackage coat, a Joseph skirt, a black high-neck top and a burgundy Strathberry tote that sold out within minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

This time, the formula was the same, but head to toe in burgundy: an oversized Joseph cashmere coat over a matching Joseph high-neck jumper, a plum crepe pencil skirt by The Fold, a Marks and Spencer leather belt, Jennifer Chamandi pumps and a Joseph woven mini bag.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why It Resonated<\/b><\/h2>\n

By leaving her most famous ring at home<\/a><\/strong> and keeping Diana’s watch, Meghan let a single, personal piece speak for her.
