Many women still dab it around their eyes every night, convinced it keeps wrinkles at bay. Pharmacists have a more nuanced view.

Nivea Creme is an excellent protective moisturizer, they say. But it is not an anti-wrinkle treatment, and its real strengths lie elsewhere.

A Formula With More Than a Century of History

Nivea‘s story began in 1911, when Dr. Isaac Lifschütz developed Eucerit, an emulsifier that made it possible to combine oil and water into a stable cream, according to the University of Wuppertal. The brand’s famous blue tin with white lettering arrived in 1925.

Its key ingredients include mineral oil, paraffin, microcrystalline wax, glycerin, lanolin alcohol and panthenol, plus fragrance.

What It Actually Does

The cream is occlusive: it forms a film on the skin that limits water loss. Spanish pharmacist Eduardo Senante explains that it “acts as a protective shield and keeps us from losing water,” while noting that its hydrating capacity “is not excessive.” Glycerin and panthenol add basic hydration.

Pharmacist Eva Fernández adds that the smoothing effect is visual and temporary: by sealing moisture in, the skin looks smoother for a short time, but nothing changes in the deeper layers.

Why It Cannot Fight Wrinkles

Anti-aging skincare relies on ingredients that act on cell renewal, collagen or sun damage. Pharmacist and formulator Roger Nebot points out that the blue tin contains no retinoids, no effective vitamin C, no peptides with evidence behind them and no sunscreen. “It’s not a bad cream, but it’s not an anti-aging cream or a complete facial moisturizer either,” he says. In his view, it “does not meet the real needs of facial skin from 40 to 50 years old.”

Portuguese pharmacist Rafaela Ribeiro agrees: dry skin loves it, but it “offers no anti-aging action.” For wrinkle prevention, Nebot names daily sun protection as the best anti-aging step there is.

Who Should Avoid It on the Face

Its rich texture can be a problem for some skin types. Nebot says it can worsen breakouts on oily or acne-prone skin and clog pores on combination skin. Fernández says she would not use it on her own face because it can be comedogenic. Its fragrance and allergens such as limonene, linalool and geraniol can also irritate sensitive skin, eyelids and lips.

Where It Works Wonders

On very dry, rough areas, the blue tin is hard to beat. Fernández calls it unbeatable for heels, elbows and knees, and heels are where its occlusive formula makes the biggest difference. Apply a generous layer at night after a shower, put on cotton socks and let it work while you sleep. Within a few nights, rough, cracked skin feels noticeably softer.

It also works well on chapped hands in cold weather, and Nebot suggests using it as a final sealing layer on very dry patches, applied over a serum.

The blue Nivea tin is not an anti-wrinkle cream. But keep it in your cabinet: for your heels, it may be one of the best-value treatments you can buy.

[5336

Pharmacists Agree the Blue Nivea Tin Isn't an Anti-Wrinkle Cream, but It Works Wonders on One Part of Your Body - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="A legendary moisturizer, a lot of myths and one place where it truly shines: your heels. It sits in bathroom cabinets around the world, in the same round tin your mother and grandmother probably used.
