One of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century took a far rarer route. After her sprawling Malibu property refused to sell, she decided that if nobody would buy it, she would simply give it away.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<b>In short<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barbra Streisand donated her 22.5-acre Malibu estate, valued at $15 million, to a California conservancy in 1993.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The property includes five homes, gardens and orchards in Ramirez Canyon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Renamed Ramirez Canyon Park in 2009, it is now a public park visited by appointment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>A star retreat in Ramirez Canyon<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbra_Streisand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barbra Streisand<\/a>, now 84 and one of the rare EGOT winners, built her retreat in Ramirez Canyon, near Malibu. Over the years, it grew to 22.5 acres, with five homes spread across six lots, gardens, orchards, a swimming pool and a tennis court, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cronista.com\/en\/lifestyle\/in-1993-barbra-streisand-donated-her-22-acre-malibu-estate-then-worth-15-million-today-it-is-a-conservation-park-in-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cronista<\/a>, which cites a California Coastal Commission report.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why did she give it away?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the 1980s, Streisand tried to sell the estate and struggled to find a buyer. She then changed course entirely. In 1993, she donated the property, then valued at $15 million, to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, a state agency that protects natural land and promotes environmental education.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What it has become<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The estate was renamed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ramirez_Canyon_Park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ramirez Canyon Park<\/a> in 2009 and is now owned by the state of California. It is used for conservation, education and regulated recreation, with trails, picnic areas and guided tours. In 2011, California Governor Jerry Brown proposed selling the park as part of a budget plan, a move the Conservancy opposed.
