Throughout the last 12 months, British pop star Dua Lipa<\/a> has proved herself to be one of the most stylish celebrities on the planet\u2014touring her chart-topping album, Future Nostalgia<\/em>, in an impeccable mix of off-the-runway and archive pieces<\/a> by the likes of Mugler, Versace, and Valentino. In short? When she talks fashion, we listen. Overnight, Lipa posted a selfie wearing an oh-so-New Year’s outfit: a fuchsia cut-out dress (we’re yet to get confirmation, but it looks to be the work of Albanian designer Nensi Dojaka<\/a>), Amina Muaddi embellished mules<\/a>, and sheer black tights. The kicker? A pair of sheer opera gloves, worn with chunky statement rings.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it’s no surprise\u2014given the last 12 months have been defined by hand sanitizer, face masks, and a general obsession with keeping germ-free\u2014that gloves have fallen back into favor amongst fashion types. At the spring-summer 21 shows in September, statement gloves appeared everywhere from Erdem (ruched and silk) to Fendi (bold bursts of color, finished in cashmere), and Mugler (skintight and sheer). The message was simple: the dominating accessory of 2021 will be hand protection.<\/p>\n

Wanting to try out the look for yourself? There’s no better time to embrace the theatricality of an elbow-skimming opera glove than New Year’s Eve\u2014even if Covid-19 restrictions mean you’re likely to be celebrating at home. Take a leaf out of Dua’s book by color matching your gloves to your outfit (extra points for keeping your eye makeup cohesive too), then layer on gold jewelry for an added touch of glamour. With super-chic iterations by the likes of Dries Van Noten, Gucci, and Emilia Wickstead currently available, it’d be rude not to.<\/p>\n
