In France, charming villages are certainly not in short supply. Every region has its own gems, waiting to be discovered<\/a>. However, not all villages are fortunate enough to receive the prestigious label of \u201cMost Beautiful Village in France.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among those honored with this distinction is Tourtour<\/strong>, located in the Var region. Nicknamed the \u201cVillage in the Sky of Provence,\u201d this picturesque commune in the Proven\u00e7al hinterland stands out for its exceptional geographical location. Perched at an altitude of 635 meters on the Beau Soleil hill, Tourtour faces the Sainte-Victoire mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes and gorges.<\/p>\n

A Village with a Medieval Past<\/h2>\n

Walking through Tourtour is like stepping back in time. The village has retained its authentic charm with its ancient and perfectly picturesque architecture. According to Ouest France<\/em>, its narrow streets, stone houses adorned with soft pastel hues, and round-tiled roofs add to its timeless appeal.<\/p>\n

You can also find structures that have stood the test of time. On the Place des Ormeaux, for instance, eight fountains are fed by the Saint Rosaire spring. The water from this source also supplies the village\u2019s traditional oil mill, built in the 17th century.<\/p>\n

The three layers of ramparts reflect Tourtour\u2019s medieval heritage. The village is also home to a 12th-century castle, now an art gallery that highlights the local cultural heritage, including a permanent exhibition of Ronald Searle\u2019s drawings. Meanwhile, the Tourtour town hall and post office have settled into the Ch\u00e2teau de Raph\u00e9lis, a 16th-century building that also boasts a garden featuring bronze sculptures by Bernard Buffet.<\/p>\n

What to Do in Tourtour?<\/h2>\n

Tourtour hosts the smallest film festival in the world, called “CourtsCourts.” For over a decade, this festival has taken place every summer under the stars at the village\u2019s open-air theater. Over three evenings, cinephiles gather for moments of conviviality and emotion. Adult viewers vote for the \u201cAudience Award,\u201d while the younger ones choose the \u201cPrix des Pichoun.\u201d As seen on the official Instagram account of the Tourtour town hall, the village seems to draw celebrities as well<\/a>\u2014Brad Pitt made a stop here during the summer of 2023, leaving a lovely photo as a souvenir for the deputy mayors.<\/p>\n

Beyond its cultural offerings, Tourtour serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding landscapes. Numerous hiking trails meander through the hills, leading to the stunning lakes and gorges of the Verdon region. These paths offer panoramic views of the Proven\u00e7al countryside, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local flora while enjoying the fresh air of the highlands.<\/a><\/p>\n
