On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, King Charles III delivered his second King\u2019s Speech since ascending the throne<\/a>. During this address, the monarch unveiled the first legislative program in 15 years from a Labour government. He discussed various critical topics including ecology, workers’ rights, and public spending control.<\/p>\n

Despite the significance of the occasion, a rather embarrassing incident occurred during the ceremony.<\/p>\n

A Cringe-Worthy Moment in the House of Lords<\/h2>\n

As The Mirror<\/em> noted, the State Opening of Parliament is rich with traditions that nod to centuries of history. This lavish ceremony heralds the start of the parliamentary year and provides the first glimpse of the new Labour government’s priorities.<\/p>\n

After arriving at Westminster Palace in a state carriage with the Household Cavalry and entering through the Sovereign’s Entrance, the king appeared in full royal regalia. A perfect silence filled the room as the monarch made his entrance alongside Queen Camilla<\/a>. As King Charles and Queen Camilla approached the thrones, the House of Lords remained entirely silent\u2014except for a mobile phone ringing just as the king sat down.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Internet Erupts Over Phone Ring During the Speech of King Charles III<\/h2>\n

Fans of the royal family<\/a> found the phone’s interruption not only noticeable but incredibly inappropriate. On X, one user wrote, “A mobile phone rings as #KingCharles sits on his throne, in state dress, at the House of Lords. 21st century Britain.”<\/em> Another added, “Someone’s mobile rang in the House of Lords before King Charles began to speak. These kids can’t stay off their devices for two minutes!” <\/em>A third commented, “Someone’s mobile phone rang just after the king sat down in the House of Lords…”<\/em><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time a phone has disrupted proceedings in the House of Lords, leading to an awkward situation. In 2023, Labour MP Lord Woodley had to apologize after his phone started playing the Mission Impossible theme just as then-environment minister Lord Douglas Miller was being introduced.<\/p>\n
