{"id":937,"date":"2020-10-26T04:04:54","date_gmt":"2020-10-26T04:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=173125"},"modified":"2020-10-26T19:32:23","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T19:32:23","slug":"kaia-gerber-emily-ratajkowski-book-club-joan-didion-play-it-as-it-lays","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/kaia-gerber-emily-ratajkowski-book-club-joan-didion-play-it-as-it-lays\/","title":{"rendered":"Emily Ratajkowski Was A Guest On Kaia Gerber\u2019s Book Club \u2013 And We Took Notes For You"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-video\" style=\"width: 640px;\"><video id=\"video-173125-2\" class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" poster=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-26-at-3.00.22-PM.png\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/video><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/search\/?search=kaia%20gerber&amp;tags=kaia%20gerber\">Kaia Gerber<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/search\/?search=emrata&amp;tags=emrata\">Emily Ratajkowski<\/a> went live on Instagram over the weekend to discuss Joan Didion\u2019s disturbing and riveting 1970 novel <em>Play It As It Lays<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of Gerber\u2019s weekly book club \u2013 a \u201cquarantine passion project\u201d \u2013 the pair intelligently discusses the struggles Didion encountered in 1960s Los Angeles and how this dissection of American life draws parallels to the female existence today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a book that was written in 1970 and I almost wish it was less relevant because that would mean that we\u2019d made actual progress,\u201d says 28-year-old Ratajkowski. \u201cBut I\u2019m grateful that there is a text like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the uninitiated, <em>Play It As It Lays<\/em> follows a young, struggling actor named Maria who is recovering from a mental breakdown in a psychiatric hospital in LA. The book flashes back to her life before her stint in the ward and it\u2019s both a mix of glamour and grimness. Of dizzying highs and rock bottom. There\u2019s a marriage breakdown, her career loss, parental deaths, drugs and an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Didion] talks about abortion,\u201d says Gerber. \u201cNo one was even talking about it when Joan wrote this book and\u2026it was a big deal. [Maria] feeling like she didn\u2019t have a choice was something that was super triggering for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was really striking to me was the inconvenience of her emotions and her pain,\u201d replies Ratajkowski. \u201cAnd how much all the men and women around her are like, \u2018We don\u2019t have time for you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173127\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width -width\" style=\"width: 560px;\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173127\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-173127 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-24-at-10.31.18-AM.png?resize=560%2C678\" alt=\"emily ratajkowski in bed with a book \" width=\"560\" height=\"678\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-173127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instagram \/ @emrata<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA woman who is really beautiful and capable has been really oppressed \u2013 she\u2019s actually lost touch of her own emotions. Because they are <em>so<\/em> inconvenient and no one at any point is respectful or compassionate. There\u2019s nowhere to go to. She\u2019s so alone all the time,\u201d she continues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"quotation-style\">\u201cWith her misery, she\u2019s just floating through life, it\u2019s so hard to read.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ratajkowski \u2013 who admits to reading the book in college \u2013 says it hit her differently reading it a decade later. \u201cI think I wasn\u2019t ready for the book [back then]. I\u2019m really glad that I re-read it,\u201d she says. \u201cI guess I [initially] was like, \u2018Why is she so sad? She feels so sorry for herself. Who are these people?\u2019 At that point in my life, maybe I wasn\u2019t capable of being compassionate with her. That is, when the rug is pulled out from underneath us, who are we <em>really<\/em> and what are we left with?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the book starts, Maria\u2019s her father\u2019s daughter (and she talks about her dad and how he shaped who she became),\u201d begins Gerber. \u201cThen she was her husband\u2019s wife (and Carter really objectified her because he made this movie about her which she openly expresses she was uncomfortable with). He made the movie to further his career and then leaves her for dust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer third role is that she\u2019s the sex object to the public,\u201d continues Gerber. \u201cOnce she feels stripped of these roles, she starts to question, \u2018Who am I? What am I left with?\u2019 All of her roles were defined by men in her life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love that so much, it\u2019s so beautifully put,\u201d replies Ratajkowski. \u201cShe\u2019s been defined since birth by how men have seen her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"price-style\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/articles\/emily-ratajkowski-surviving-quarantine-new-york\/\">READ: HOW EMILY RATAJKOWSKI IS COPING BEING QUARANTINED IN NEW YORK CITY<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On this note \u2013 and prior to bringing Ratajkowski into the Instagram Live, Gerber quotes her favorite line in the book: <em>\u201cShe could remember it all but none of it seemed to come to anything. She had a sense that dream had ended and she\u2019d slept on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173128\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width -width\" style=\"width: 500px;\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173128\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-173128 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Screen-Shot-2020-05-24-at-10.43.31-AM.png?resize=500%2C657\" alt=\"kaia gerber reading\" width=\"500\" height=\"657\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-173128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instagram \/ @cindycrawford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA lot of women begin to feel this way, especially if you\u2019re in the public eye,\u201d Gerber says now as herself. \u201cYou\u2019re celebrated, everyone\u2019s looking at you. Suddenly \u2013 whether it\u2019s age or you become a mother or you don\u2019t want to be in the public eye anymore \u2013 you are held to these standards and when the world relies on your beauty so much, it diminishes you to just that. And then you start to lose sight of who you are and your identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is something incredibly interesting about listening to Gerber and Ratajkowski \u2013 both women in the public eye \u2013 discuss Maria\u2019s loneliness and lack of self-worth and identity. Like anything, when it\u2019s all over, what\u2019s left?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"price-style\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/articles\/the-rise-of-feminist-dystopian-fiction\/\">READ: The rise of feminist dystopian fiction\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Introducing Ratajkowski, Gerber, 18, says: \u201cHer beauty is the least incredible part of her which says so much about her as a person. She&#8217;s smart, she\u2019s advocated for women\u2019s rights, she\u2019s very outspoken about sexual misconduct and such an inspiration to so many young girls that being sexy does not mean you are not smart, that you are not important and that you are not strong. An imposition of the writer\u2019s sensibility on the reader\u2019s most private space. <em>Play It As It Lays<\/em>, published in 1970, slaps down at your soul\u2019s kitchen table and announces itself, not loudly, but in a voice that crawls under your skin, not really caring whether or not you want to see anyone, and lights a cigarette.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173129\"
