Following on the (arched) heels of Greta Gerwig\u2019s box-office sensation <\/span>Barbie<\/span><\/i>, Mattel\u2019s planned live-action adaptation of their tiniest toy of all, Polly Pocket, has already encountered its first plot twist. Like the development hell that plagued bringing the saccharine and slightly existential film to the big screen, the untitled production has seemingly stalled with slated writer and director Lena Dunham no longer involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with <\/span>The New Yorker <\/span><\/i><\/a>released on July 9, 2024, Dunham shared her rationale for walking away from the silicon world of Tinkerbell-sized playthings.\u00a0 \u201cI feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it,\u201d she said before adding she thought \u201cother people could make \u2018Polly Pocket\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The real-life Mattel executives\u2014not the oafish rollerblading bigwigs played by Will Ferrell and his band of merry imbeciles in<\/span> Barbie<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u2014operated under a high-risk, high-reward mentality regarding the rose-coloured glass ceiling-shattering movie. <\/span>Barbie <\/span><\/i>defied expectations to become the biggest opening weekend ever for a movie directed by a woman and the biggest debut of the year with a<\/span> USD$155 million return at the box office.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Naturally, this puts immense pressure on the next person stepping up to translate their plastic IP into a global cinematic and cultural phenomenon\u2014especially as speculation surrounding a rumoured Barbie sequel (a film in which <\/span>Oppenhiemer\u2019s<\/span><\/i> Cillian Murphy<\/span><\/a> tongue-and-cheekily expressed interest in playing Ken) ramps up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And as Polly Pocket certainly doesn\u2019t suffer the same \u2018bimbo\u2019 reputation as Barbie, and thus won\u2019t have to overcome the same trials of<\/span> defending itself against the patriarchy as Gerwig has<\/span><\/a>, the film could undoubtedly meet expectations if moulded by the right hands. Unfortunately for Dunham\u2019s acolytes, this film just won’t come to fruition in hers.<\/span><\/p>\n

With Lily Collins scheduled to helm the cast in the leading role and Dunham declaring her vision didn\u2019t align with \u201cwhat the world wants\u201d, keep scrolling ahead for everything we know about the Polly Pocket movie so far.<\/span><\/p>\n

Will There Be A Polly Pocket Movie?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Short answer, yes. Long answer, in 2021, Mattel confirmed the production of a real-life Polly Pocket adaptation, with the news first reported by<\/span> Variety<\/span><\/i><\/a>. <\/span><\/i>As per the publication, the Polly Pocket film is just one in a slew of toy-to-movie adaptations proposed by Mattel, with American Girl and Hot Wheels joining the cinematic toy universe<\/span>. Of course, what of the film\u2019s future now that Dunham has taken a step back (and the script she spent three years writing with her)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Explaining her reasoning, Dunham revealed that she doesn\u2019t have crafting a narrative so perfectly aligned with the culture and commercial needs \u201cin her\u201d. Read her full statement below:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to make the Polly Pocket movie. I wrote a script, and I was working on it for three years. But I remember someone once said to me about Nancy Meyers: the thing that\u2019s the most amazing about her is that the movie she makes or the movie she would be making with or without a studio, with or without notes\u2014that somehow her taste manages to intersect perfectly with what the world wants. What a f****** gift that is. And Nora Ephron, too, who was such a mentor to me, but always said, \u2018Go be weird. Don\u2019t kowtow to anyone.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think Greta [Gerwig] managed this incredible feat [with \u201cBarbie\u201d], which was to make this thing that was literally candy to so many different kinds of people and was perfectly and divinely Greta. And I just\u2014I felt like, unless I can do it that way, I\u2019m not going to do it. I don\u2019t think I have that in me. I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it. And I did think other people could make Polly Pocket.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to <\/span>The Hollywood Reporter <\/span><\/i><\/a>soon after the news broke, a spokesperson for Mattel claimed the movie is in \u201cactive development\u201d, and the conglomerate still hopes the film will come to fruition. \u201cWe look forward to sharing updates on the project soon,\u201d they added. Mattel also praised Dunham, calling the multi-hyphenate writer, director and actor a \u201cremarkable writer and creator\u201d and wishing her all the best in future endeavours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The latter includes an upcoming romantic-comedy starring actress and comedian Megan Stalter about a thirtysomething American woman living abroad in London. Titled <\/span>Too Much<\/span><\/i>, the semi-autobiographical series will debut on Netflix in 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the Polly Pocket adaption is set to appeal to late 90s and early 2000s babies who grew up preferring the miniature fashion doll compared to her bigger contemporary, the movie could certainly face the same success as the Margot Robbie-produced blockbuster. <\/span>If <\/span><\/i>the costume designer looks to LOEWE\u2019s rubber-like doll dresses from its<\/span> Fall\/Winter 2023 collection, that is.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Who Is Cast In The Polly Pocket Movie?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Helming the project as the titular doll is none other than <\/span>Emily In Paris\u2019 <\/span><\/i><\/a>Lily Collins. Though the brunette actress hasn\u2019t divulged whether she\u2019ll be sporting Polly Pocket\u2019s signature blonde ponytails for the film, the 34-year-old took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message on what the casting means to her at the time of the announcement.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLittle Lil, big news. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pockets, it\u2019s a real dream come true to announce this project,\u201d Collins captioned an Instagram post of herself as a toddler welding a pink Polly Pocket case. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am partnering with the most inspiring powerhouse team\u2014Robbie Brenner, @lenadunham, @mattel and @mgmstudios\u2014to reintroduce Polly to the world in a fun, modern way\u2026 bringing these tiny toys to the big screen,\u201d she added. <\/span><\/p>\n

As Collins alluded to\u00a0 in her post, Dunham had initially praised the production and commended the symbolic return to this childhood material. .\u201cPolly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me \u2013 Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it\u2019s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM,\u201d Dunham explained in a statement in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, given the Polly Pocket film faced the same <\/span>cast and creative changes as the initial Barbie film<\/span><\/a>\u2014if you\u2019ll recall, A<\/span>my Schumer was originally attached to an original version of the project<\/span><\/a> before dropping out, citing \u201ccreative differences\u201d as the reason\u2014could this be the mould all future tangible-product-to-film-adaption will adhere too?<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is The Polly Pocket Movie About?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Undoubtedly, the question is on everybody\u2019s lips, especially those who have seen Gerwig\u2019s subversive take on <\/a><\/span>Barbie<\/span><\/i><\/a>. According to <\/span>Variety<\/span><\/i>, the film\u2019s official logline is as follows: \u201cThe film will centre on a young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship.\u201d It’s not obvious if the plot will change once the new director and writer takes the reigns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, this concept of bringing a doll and a human together is something we\u2019ve already seen explored in Disney\u2019s <\/span>Life-Sized <\/span><\/i>with Lindsay Lohan and Tyra Banks. But considering the project is coming from the same company that allowed Daniel Kaluuya to make an \u201cA24-type\u201d, \u201csurrealistic\u201d yet \u201cnot R-rated\u201d version of Barney<\/a> (Mattel owns the IP for the dinosaur), anything really could go. Here\u2019s hoping Barbie\u2019s feminist undertones remain a theme explored in all of Mattel\u2019s doll-to-film movies.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Will Polly Pocket Be Released?<\/b><\/p>\n

Given that filming has not begun and the production is currently embroiled in creative overhaul, it\u2019s likely we won\u2019t hear any news about Polly Pocket<\/em> until a contract is signed. <\/span><\/p>\n
