Sometimes, coincidences in timing overshadow the events themselves and take on a whole new dimension. On this fateful Saturday, July 13, news broke of Shannen Doherty\u2019s death. The actress succumbed to cancer nine years after her diagnosis, at the age of 53.<\/p>\n

On the same day, Kate Middleton made a highly noticed appearance<\/a> at the Wimbledon tournament. The Princess of Wales had stepped back from public life as she, too, has been fighting this dreadful disease. She is 43. Two events, unfolding on either side of the Atlantic, symbolically impact our hearts and inevitably move us.<\/p>\n

A Poignant Moment as Kate Middleton Receives a Standing Ovation<\/h2>\n

Furthermore, Kate Middleton received a poignant ovation. Since announcing her cancer, Kate Middleton had paused her official duties as a member of the British royal family to focus entirely on her treatment. Apart from a surprise appearance at the Trooping the Color parade<\/a> in honor of King Charles III, the Princess of Wales had been very quiet.<\/p>\n

While her fervent admirers hoped to see her at the men’s final of the Wimbledon tournament, a favorite event of hers, her appearance was not certain. Yet, her presence brightened the moment, even overshadowing the match between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. Upon her arrival in the stadium, Kate Middleton received a tremendous standing ovation from the crowd<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This immense tribute acted as a form of support from the British people to their princess of hearts but took on another dimension as news of Shannen Doherty’s death emerged. There are moments when the stomach knots, the heart tightens, and tears struggle to stay at bay.<\/p>\n

This ovation, the applause from the crowd, and Kate Middleton’s discreet smile… a moment of shivers reminding us how fragile life is. One battle was lost; the other continues to fight.<\/p>\n

Two Women Who Are So Close Yet So Distant<\/h2>\n

The plight of these women moves us so deeply because each of us likely knows someone in our circle who has been taken by cancer or has suffered from it. A relative, a friend\u2019s sister, a work colleague… it spares no one. Shannen Doherty and Kate Middleton thus become symbols. They are women we feel we know well; one\u2019s life scrutinized by tabloids, and the other, we\u2019ve grown up alongside.<\/p>\n

Kate\u2019s life has been dissected since her relationship with Prince William began. Shannen has been with us throughout our lives. In the 1980s, she was the face of the young and shy Jenny Wilder in ‘Little House on the Prairie.’ We saw her fall in love and rebel as Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills 90210” during the early 90s. Then, at the turn of the millennium, we found her as the emancipated woman embracing her power through the character of Prue Halliwell in ‘Charmed.’ We grew up with her. She has now joined Luke Perry (her co-star in Beverly Hills), who also died prematurely.<\/p>\n

Seeing Kate Middleton, all smiles and evidently in good health, in the stands at Wimbledon, undoubtedly brings a bit of cheer, even though our hearts remain tight.<\/a><\/p>\n
