It\u2019s been five years since Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon last shared the screen in the second season of <\/span>Big Little Lies<\/span><\/i>. But in a recent reunion-style interview<\/a> for <\/span>Vanity Fair<\/span><\/i>, the multi-hyphenate Hollywood alumnus got candid about their shared experiences navigating the industry<\/a>, their pivot into producing and (most importantly) teased that the highly-anticipated third season<\/a> was \u201ctaking good shape\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

The pair swapped stories about everything from their regular \u201cwalk in the woods\u201d in Nashville<\/a> to Kidman<\/a> being able to \u201cget away with murder\u201d while working with the late auteur Stanley Kubrick<\/a> during the production of 1999\u2019s <\/span>Eyes Wide Shut. <\/span><\/i>Yet, when the topic turned to their on-set antics while filming the first season of Liane Moriarty\u2019s best-selling book<\/a>, they confirmed there was an uncertain sentiment underscoring filming because of the contrasting tones within the series. <\/span><\/p>\n

Picking up with Kidman questioning Witherspoon about her nickname for Laura Dern<\/a> (but, more on that later), the <\/span>Hello Sunshine <\/span><\/i><\/a>founder recounted a story in which she shared her doubts with co-star a week into shooting. \u201cI called her and was like, \u2018Dern, I was so funny today!\u2019 and she was like, \u2018Reese, I was <\/span>so <\/span><\/i>funny in my scene yesterday,\u201d the <\/span>Morning Wars <\/span><\/i><\/a>actress began. \u201cI was like \u2018I know, but hold on, because then I went to work today and Nicole is in the most serious drama I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d she continued with a laugh before Kidman chimed in to say, \u201cThat\u2019s right!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

In unison, the pair then said: \u201cThis show is not going to work!\u201d Between giggles, Witherspoon managed to steer the conversation back to a sincere note, acknowledging that the formula and black comedy script was what made it work. Two successful seasons and an awards sweep later, safe to say these two were proven wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We here at GRAZIA firmly believe that Witherspoon and Kidman deserve a Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda-style career and continue to appear on our screens for time immemorial. The duo showed off a side of their friendship that we never see when Kidman questioned why Witherspoon only refers to Dern by her last name. \u201cI hate how you call her Dern, though,\u201d Kidman said. \u201cIt sounds weird. I\u2019m always like, \u201cLaura.\u201d And you\u2019re like, \u201cNo, Dern. Dern. Dern.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Witherspoon offered this as an explanation: \u201cMy name\u2019s Laura and her name\u2019s Laura, and it\u2019s confusing to me. My real name\u2019s Laura Jeanne. I get confused, so I just call her Dern.\u201d Kidman didn\u2019t buy the rationale, lovingly responding, \u201cShe doesn\u2019t call you Laura, though. Anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
