They were one of Hollywood’s golden couples\u2014quite literally, with their coordinating blonde locks\u2014but the decades apart may have Ryan Phillippe feeling nostalgic about his ex Reese Witherspoon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On May 27, the actor posted a sweet throwback from 2001 on his Instagram Stories. In the picture, he and Witherspoon are posing together at a Legally Blonde<\/em> <\/a>premiere\u2014him wearing a blue and white striped collared t-shirt with the sleeves cut off, a chain necklace and a modest mohawk, her with a chin-grazing bob haircut and a black and white striped sundress.<\/p>\n

Despite the eccentric retro looks, what was most notable, was the 49-year-old’s comment.<\/p>\n

“We were hot and drenched in late-’90s angst,” he wrote alongside the photo, sending fans into a frenzy.<\/p>\n

Having met at Witherspoon’s 21st birthday party in 1997, the couple went on to star in the cult-hit Cruel Intentions<\/em> together and tied the knot in 1999.<\/p>\n

After welcoming two children together; Ava<\/a>, 24, and Deacon, 20, they eventually split<\/a> in 2006.<\/p>\n

Witherspoon, 48, briefly dated Jake Gyllenhaal<\/a> before marrying Jim Toth and having a son, Tennessee, with him before they divorced<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n

Phillippe has notably dated actress Abbie Cornish, had a child, Kai, 11, with Alexis Knapp and was engaged to Paulina Slagter until the two called it off in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did a good job as co-parents, and I knew that we would even back when we were very young,” he told The Guardian<\/em><\/a> about his relationship with Witherspoon. “Knowing how volatile Hollywood relationships can be, I knew that even if we didn\u2019t make it, she would be a great person to raise kids with.”<\/p>\n
