Cast your minds back to a mere month ago\u2014a time before Zendaya rendered every iteration of the tenniscore<\/a> aesthetic in dazzling custom Loewe<\/a> or vintage Louis Vuitton designed by Marc Jacobs. The <\/span>Challengers <\/span><\/i><\/a>star<\/a> currently has the zeitgeist\u2019s attention captured in her serve of countless sportif looks<\/a>, but it wasn\u2019t too long before hand that she had us in a chokehold through the intergalactic planetary fantasy<\/a> she was peddling to promote Denis Villeneuve\u2019s <\/span>Dune: Part Two<\/span><\/i><\/a>.<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

In futuristic vintage Givenchy designed by Alexander McQueen to body-sculpting Ala\u00efa<\/a> that channelled the shape of the \u2018Shai-Hulud\u2019 (the greatest sandworm crawling through Arakasis\u2019 desserts), we collectively tipped our space helmets to fashion\u2019s greatest showman. Of course, the undoubtedly magnus opus look from the press tour came in fembot form when Zendaya arrived at the London premiere in Mugler\u2019s archival \u201cGynoid\u201d suit presented in his theatrical Fall\/Winter 1995 runway show. (Yes, <\/span>that<\/span><\/i> hourlong latex and fashion legend-laden performance<\/a>\u00a0presented at Cirque d\u2019Hiver in Paris).<\/span><\/p>\n

In chrome and plexiglass, Zendaya and her \u201cimage architect\u201d Law Roach<\/a> offered up one of the greatest vintage-fashion pulls a red carpet has ever seen. The 27-year-old starlet cut through the sand of the red carpet with as much poise as her Freman character, Chani, possessed in the sequel, not to mention the Bulgari high jewellery heavy diamond necklace she wore around her neck. <\/span><\/p>\n

As we reported at the time<\/a>, the suit not only stole the show at the premiere but was arguably her greatest fashion look of all time. Now, Zendaya has divulged how the spectacular display came to be, and the realities and real-life risks of dressing as a cyboid in the name of style. \u201cThis suit, everybody knows it,\u201d she began when dissecting the silhouette for <\/span>Vogue\u2019s<\/span><\/i> \u2018Life in Looks\u2019 series. \u201cI was like, \u2018I wonder if I could wear that,\u2019 and so I sent it to Law and I was like, \u2018What if we wore this for the premiere?\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Zendaya shared that Roach responded hesitantly: \u201cAre you being serious? Don’t play with me. Like, don’t get me started on something and make me do this, and you’re gonna, like, chicken out at the last minute and be too scared to wear it.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018I mean, if we can do it.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The Emmy Award-winning actress then explained how the hinges on the literal moving sculpture mightn\u2019t have enabled her to pull this look off, but both she and the Mugler team were thrilled that she could fit into the piece. \u201cWe tried it on and it fit like a glove, and I was like, \u2018This is so crazy.\u2019 And everybody was like, \u2018Oh!\u2019 It just felt very\u2026meant to be,\u201d she added. <\/span><\/p>\n

But underneath the (literal) polished veneer, Zendaya revealed that there was a moment where she was contemplating not wearing it at all because of how dangerously constrictive the suit was. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think after wearing it for like 10 minutes or less than that, I got really lightheaded,\u201d she noted.\u00a0 \u201cThe metal conducts and holds on to heat very quickly and kind of traps heat in. I’m wearing a complete bodysuit, so there’s a barrier, so you already have a layer of material kind of on your skin. As the days were coming up, I was like, \u2018This is a bad idea. Like, why did I do this?\u2019 But I put it on, I went out there, and I did it.\u201d That she did. <\/span><\/p>\n

Zendaya later changed into a custom Mugler dress designed by current creative director Casey Cadwallader. <\/span><\/p>\n

Bridging house archives with contemporary codes isn\u2019t only fitting for themes in the neo-feudalistic, sci-fi epic, but a skill that only she possesses. Yes, the look had us in a chokehold, but Zendaya in a literal grasp, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
