Greta Gerwig must be protected at all costs. The multi-hyphenated actress and director delivered the perfect response to Jo Koy\u2019s panned opening monologue<\/a> from the 2024 Golden Globes<\/a>, in which he whittled the triumphant and box-office-breaking Barbie<\/em> film<\/a> down to being about a \u201cdoll with big boobies\u201d.<\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, the veteran stand-up comic handed down what is now being labelled as a sexist jab in his introductory speech at the 81st annual industry event. He touched on the \u201cBarbenheimer\u201d phenomenon and the unexpected double-billing that resulted in unprecedented fanfare about the polar opposite films.<\/p>\n

Koy congratulated the Gerwig-helmed<\/a> feminist retelling of the silicon icon<\/a> and Christopher Nolan\u2019s Oppenheimer<\/em><\/a> for their respective \u201cBest Motion Picture\u201d nominations<\/a>. Like many before him, Koy compared the films, joking that, \u201cOppenheimer<\/em> is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project \u2014 and Barbie<\/em> is about a plastic doll with big boobies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely because it is about a plastic doll\u2026The insight that Ruth Handler<\/a> [Barbie\u2019s inverter] had when she was watching her daughter play with baby dolls, is she realised, \u2018My daughter doesn\u2019t want to pretend to be a mother. She wants to pretend to be a grown woman.\u2019\u201d The acme of handling things with aplomb.<\/p>\n

As Gerwig honed home during the film, Barbie is both an ideal and a vehicle for embodying the innate contradictions inherent to what society expects from women. (As you may have gleaned, America Ferrera\u2019s monologue in the film\u2019s second act is symbolic of this tightrope we walk in a society operating under patriarchy).<\/p>\n

So yes, Koy, Barbie is more than a film about a doll with boobs. To borrow Saoirse Ronan\u2019s speech as Jo March in Gerwig\u2019s Little Women<\/em>, \u201cWomen have minds and souls as well as hearts, ambition and talent as well as beauty.\u201d And apparently, breasts worth commenting on, too.<\/p>\n
