Natalie Portman<\/a> has spoken out about her time as a child star, saying that being portrayed in a sexualized fashion at such a young age significantly impacted her own sexuality. In a new interview for Dax Shepard<\/a>‘s Armchair Expert<\/em> podcast, the actress recalls being very aware of the perception of her characters in films such as Beautiful Girls<\/em> and Leon: The Professional.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI was definitely aware of the fact that like, I was being portrayed \u2014 like mainly in the kind of journalism around when the movies would come out \u2014 as this Lolita<\/em> figure and stuff,\u201d recalls Portman<\/a>, who was just 12 when she started acting.<\/p>\n

Portman says that her desire to separate herself publicly from her on-screen personas resulted in a complicated relationship to her own sexuality. \u201cBeing sexualized as a child, I think, took away from my own sexuality because it made me afraid and it made me like the way I could be safe was to be like, ‘I’m conservative,’ and ‘I’m serious and you should respect me,’ and ‘I’m smart,’ and ‘Don’t look at me that way.'”<\/p>\n

The Thor<\/em> star recalls feeling limited by the precautions she would take, even though she believed they kept her safe in the film industry. \u201cI would start choosing parts that were less sexy because it made me worried about the way I was perceived and how safe I felt,\u201d she said. \u201cSo many people, I think, had this impression of me that I was, like, super serious, and like a prude and conservative. I realize I consciously cultivated that because it was a way to make me feel safe. That, \u2018Oh, if someone respects you, they\u2019re not going to objectify you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the image Portman was trying to create, she admits that it may have stunted her own sexual growth. “At that age, you do have your own sexuality, and you do have your own desire, and you do want to explore things, and you do want to be open. But you don’t feel safe, necessarily, when there’s, like, older men that are interested, and you’re like, ‘No, no, no, no,'” she explained.<\/p>\n

Eventually Portman was able to embrace her sexuality, saying that it “[all] worked out, luckily.
