However, even if we know how important sleep is for <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/best-celeb-founded-non-alcoholic-drink-companies\/\">our well-being<\/a>, we don\u2019t necessarily sleep as many hours as<strong> our body needs to recuperate<\/strong> from the day.<\/p>\n<p>Wanting to make the most of our quiet evening, reading or insomnia are common reasons for us to push back bedtime. To set the clocks right and sleep well again, the experts devised a chart that indicates how long you are supposed to sleep according to your age. Thus, we\u2019ll all want to sleep like babies soon enough.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How long must we really sleep?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>People lack sleep, that\u2019s a given. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/how-sleep-works\/how-much-sleep-do-we-really-need\" target=\"_blank\">National Sleep Foundation<\/a>\u00a0conducted a study that revealed that people sleep <strong>less than seven hours a night<\/strong>, which is largely insufficient. When we are teenagers, we pull all-nighters without thinking of the consequences. When we\u2019re adults, it\u2019s clearly not the same story!<\/p>\n<p>Charles Czeisler, president of the National Sleep Foundation, explained,\u00a0<i>\u201cIt is important to be aware of these numbers, because we spend an average of a third of our lives asleep. Our health depends greatly on the quality and quantity of sleep. This remains an essential topic that influences our lifespan.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-80576 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/09\/SF-23-074_RecommendedHoursofSleep_Graphic-opt1-1-1024x717-1.jpeg\" alt=\"sleep chart\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" data-gz_credit=\"American Academy of Sleep Medicine\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even though we don\u2019t necessarily follow these rules every night, we are supposed to sleep <strong>between 8 and 10 hours as teenagers<\/strong>. When we become adults, this decreases slightly.<\/p>\n<p>For adults who still study, the National Sleep Foundation advises <strong>9 hours per night<\/strong>. For active adults, the recommended length of sleep is <strong>between 7 and 9 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If one follows this logic, we should sleep even less as we age. However, scientists advise sleeping <strong>7 to 8 hours daily<\/strong> as a senior. In fact, seniors should sleep more, especially if they feel the need to because their bodies are prone to getting tired quickly.<\/p>\n<h2><b>The effects of sleep on well-being<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Getting the right amount of sleep is important not only for our <strong>physical<\/strong> <strong>health<\/strong> but also for our <strong>mental health<\/strong>. Lack of sleep can lead to numerous diseases, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Dementia<\/li>\n<li>Heart conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sleeping is essential for resting the cardiovascular system. Thus, if we don\u2019t rest enough, our hearts and arteries tire more quickly. Moreover, being tired because we lack sleep affects our <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/christian-angermayer-combating-aging\/\">mental health<\/a>. Lack of sleep can cause <strong>depression<\/strong>, <strong>anxiety<\/strong> and <strong>mood<\/strong> <strong>disorders<\/strong>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sleeping well helps with weight loss<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>When night falls and our body dives into deep restorative sleep, it secretes two <strong>hormones<\/strong> that help weight loss. The first one is <strong>leptin<\/strong>. Leptin induces fullness and, thus, reduces hunger. It also activates the metabolism, which means your body is less likely to store fat.<\/p>\n<p>The second hormone that helps with weight loss and that the body secretes during deep restorative sleep is <strong>melatonin<\/strong>.
