Everest behind covered by monsoon clouds. (Photo by Frank Bienewald/LightRocket via Getty Images)

Hiking is not the only way to get to Everest Base Camp. For decades it was thought the only way to get to the base camp of Mount Everest was to hike. Which was true, but this is no longer the case. Short, half day helicopter tours are now available to take non-trekkers to the base of the world’s highest mountain.

Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour is the easiest and shortest way to see Everest Base Camp or EBC as it’s called in the trekking world. No more hiking for 12 to 15 days days; no more blistered feet; no less-than-luxurious living conditions on the trail, and no more aching muscles. This new tour takes passengers from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, into the Himalayan mountains, with three landing stops.

Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour

Designed to show the best of the Himalayas, along with a taste of hiking, without actually doing it, this four to five hour trip is top of many bucket lists. Whether you are planning an Instagram journey, planning a honeymoon to the mountains, or simply collecting personal memories, this trip will not disappoint.

Leaving Kathmandu at around 6am, the helicopter flies over the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding low hills until it reaches the entrance to the Everest Region at Lukla. At Lukla there is a brief landing to refuel. With an airport named Hillary Tenzing Airport, you already get the feeling of mountaineering history as you watch Sherpa porters unloading planes of both expedition members and goods.

Flying over forests and rivers you enter Sagarmatha National Park. Around you are some of the highest mountains in the world as well as some well-known place names in the climbing fraternity. Flying over Namche Bazaar and the nearby village of Khumjung village your pilot, and guide for this trip, may remind you of the school and health post Sir Edmund Hillary set up in Khumjung as a thank you to the Sherpa people who were instrumental in his successful summit of Everest. The pilot may also point out that Hillary was also the inspiration behind setting up the airport at Lukla.

The history and beauty of the area continues as you fly over Tengboche Monastery. Surrounded by the stunning mountains, it is not hard to imagine what it might be like being a monk cloistered here in this tranquil setting.

The landscape is rugged and harsh as the helicopter approaches EBC. Below mountaineers can be seen, (in the climbing seasons of spring and autumn) setting up camp and preparing to scale the world’s highest mountain. The helicopter lands nearby on a high rocky ridge called Kalapattar. From here the views of the mountains are breath-taking. This is your Instagram story right here. This is where you take your honeymoon photos. And this is where you take home stories to tell your future grandchildren. You might, highly recommended, be wearing a thick down jacket on this trip, with chunky walking boots, but no reason why you can’t whip it off for a minute (and no more in the freezing conditions) for that special photo. No reason either why those walking boots aren’t Moncler or whatever brand is in this season.

Champagne Breakfast with a View at Everest View Hotel

Aside from the history, spectacular views, thrilling helicopter experience, and feeling of humility that being among towering natural phenomena gives, we recommend you celebrate with a glass of bubbly. The third landing point is at a suitably named hotel, situated high up in the mountains and with spectacular views of Mt Everest and surrounding mountains. Breakfast at the Everest View Hotel is provided, you just need to add on the champagne. For those with an interest in architecture, this hotel is Japanese inspired with glass windows and other features being imported from Japan during the construction phase in the 1960s. Before Hillary “built” his airport. Designed by Japanese architect Yoshinobu Kumagaya, the hotel sits at 3,962m/13,000 ft and is in the World Guinness Book of Records as the highest hotel in the world. Cleverly designed, each room has a clear view of the mountains and from the dining terrace there is a 360 degree view, which includes Mt Everest of course.

Making Arrangements for Everest Helicopter Tour

If you are inspired to head off to Nepal and take this world-class helicopter tour, information can be found through Magical Nepal. This is a year-round trip but in terms of crystal clear skies, the best times to go are probably in the spring and autumn. The tour is suitable for everyone, except small children, and because the duration is short, there is very low risk of altitude related problems. It should be noted that seats are sold individually on a group helicopter tour at the rate of $1,175. It is possible to charter the whole helicopter for your own use, and that rate for that can be discussed when you make your enquiry. High altitude helicopters hold five to six people.

<!-- This site is
