CANNES, FRANCE: When the capital of Afghanistan<\/a>, Kabul, fell in 2021, Jennifer Lawrence<\/a> tapped her producer pal Justine Ciarrocchi, and together they approached Afghan documentary maker, Sahra Mani<\/a>, to document what it is actually like for women living under Taliban rule.<\/p>\n

Yes, after 20 years of gains, the experience of being a woman in Afghanistan completely changed one evening in August 2021 when the US evacuated the country after a near 20-year presence. Education was the first to go \u2014 girls could no longer study past the sixth grade. They could no longer leave home without a male chauffeur. They could no longer work.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, the Middle East is extremely complex and very far away and after you see things on the news so much, it can make something safely two-dimensional,\u201d Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter.<\/em><\/a> \u201cThe fear of everyone moving on and forgetting led us to try to make something more permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n

This season in Cannes, Mani\u2019s Bread and Roses<\/em>, is premiering as a special screening and documents the lives of three Afghan women. Like Cate Blanchett\u2019s The New Boy<\/em>, the title doesn\u2019t get a dedicated premiere, but is on the roster regardless. Like Blanchett, Lawrence is making noise for her film by attending a different premiere!<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old The Hunger Games<\/em> actress walked the red carpet at the premiere of Anatomy of\u00a0a\u00a0Fall<\/i> at the \u00a076th<\/sup> Cannes Film Festival on May 21. Wearing a crepe silk red haute couture gown by Dior (and diamonds by Dior Joaillerie), Lawrence channeled her inner Katniss and stopped traffic along la Croisette to say hello to fans. (For context, there are multiple barriers \u2014 including roads \u2014 between the red carpet and spectators so this would have been quite the effort!)<\/p>\n
