\u201cI\u2019m running on very little sleep and I hope this cover up is working,\u201d quips British-American designer Harris Reed<\/a>, tracing his blinged-up fingertips through his tumbling, auburn waves. It\u2019s the eve of Met Gala<\/a> Monday in Manhattan and just seven minutes prior to meeting at his hotel, the 26-year-old wunderkind politely texted to say he was in the shower and that he wouldn\u2019t be a moment.<\/p>\n

When he answered the door, his 6\u20194\u201d figure was immaculately dressed: black flares, platform boots and a Schiaparelli white tee<\/a> with two gilded brass trompe l\u2019oeil nipples on it. How did he get ready so quickly? In the moment I am surprised, but when I sit down and learn of the pace in which Reed works\u2014and speaks\u2014I understand that getting things done quickly is indeed part of his superpowers.<\/p>\n

Reed, who we now know dressed Ashley Graham<\/a> at the today\u2019s Met Gala, takes a breath when asked what it actually takes to create a piece to showcase atop the most famous steps in the world: The Metropolitan Museum of Art.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually love that I get to answer this question,\u201d says Reed. \u201cI was talking to my fianc\u00e9<\/a> earlier and I was saying it\u2019s like planning a wedding. There\u2019s so many stages. I think a lot of people think, \u2018Oh a dress arrives, she puts it on and goes on the runway \u2014 I mean the Met Gala stairs! [Laughs] To me, it\u2019s the same thing!<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s the sketching process, you then have to send the sketch to Anna Wintour,\u201d he continues. \u201cYou go back and forth with Anna personally \u2014 it\u2019s very incredible how hands-on she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou show it to the talent \u2014 they have their opinions \u2014 you then go back to Anna,\u201d Reed continues. \u201cYou then do the first initial fitting. Changes. Modifications. Then you fly to New York and do the first round of fittings with a full team, and then the second round with high jewelry, and then a third round with a glam team.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s insane how much thought, care, emotion and exhibition-worthy iconic-ness goes into these literal five seconds on the Met Gala stairs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the most insane whirlwind process but I can\u2019t imagine doing anything else. It\u2019s so surreal and crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reed \u2014 who is the creative director of French fashion House Nina Ricci<\/a>, and the founder and creative director of his own eponymous brand Harris Reed<\/a> \u2014 went viral in September of 2021 when he dressed Iman for the Met Gala. Inspired by the ballroom couture of America\u2019s golden age, Reed and his team spent 400 hours making the incredible piece of art, and critics never forgot it. But, in our funny little world, does Reed feel pressure to live up to that moment?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been one of my biggest fears,\u201d he admits. \u201cIman is [now] 67, she\u2019s one of the first African-American supermodels, and she\u2019s David Bowie\u2019s wife. She, for me, embodied everything that was incredible. She took a chance on me and we just went massive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Ashley Graham reached out and said she wanted to work with me, she really embodied everything I stand for,\u201d he continues. \u201cShe\u2019s confident, she\u2019s a curve supermodel, she\u2019s an icon, she\u2019s all about showing the beauty in everything. It felt very serendipitous.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember sending her some really larger-than-life sketches and she was like, \u2018f**k yes.\u2019 It was love at first sight, she flew to London, my team glued and taped and pinned this thing together in 12 hours. Cut to now and I\u2019m in New York City and the gown is done.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been surreal but it\u2019s been a year of me kind of figuring out how I\u2019m going to equal what I did with Iman. With Ashley, we really brought the drama.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme of this year\u2019s Met Gala is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty<\/em> and is a dedication to Lagerfeld\u2019s unparalleled contribution to the fashion industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cKarl Lagerfeld<\/a> is Karl Lagerfeld because when he was at Chlo\u00e9, Fendi and Chanel, he always respected what the past had and brought this extraordinary relevance to the future,\u201d says Reed. \u201cThe biggest lesson I have learnt from working on this year\u2019s Met Gala is the ability to honor Karl Lagerfeld, and hopefully be able to bring a modernity and a fluidity and a modern day relevance.\u201d<\/p>\n

You can bet Reed will do it all on little sleep, and platform
