Whether or not Meghan Markle and Prince Harry would choose to attend \u2013 or even be invited to \u2013 the coronation of King Charles III was the subject of much speculation leading up to the historic event taking place in London on May 6th. Following reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had missed the RSVP date<\/a>, it was confirmed by both the couple and the palace that Prince Harry would be flying to the UK solo<\/a>, leaving Markle and their two children, Archie and Lilibet<\/a>, at home in California.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time, the reason given to the public was that Markle would stay behind to celebrate Archie\u2019s birthday<\/a>, something that seemingly confirmed the rumored reason they hadn\u2019t confirmed their attendance until the last minute: specific requests \u2013 such as there being some kind of celebration for Archie\u2019s birthday, which falls on the same day as the coronation \u2013 had reportedly been asked of the royals, which appear, given Markle\u2019s absence, to have been declined.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a new <\/span>People<\/span><\/i><\/a> report, there’s more to the story of Markle choosing to skip the coronation than just Archie’s 4th birthday (of course). The publication spoke to multiple sources who made it clear that the rift between Harry, Meghan and the royal family played a bigger role in the couple’s decision than initially reported and that there has been no private reconciliation with the family, following their Oprah<\/a> interview, Netflix documentary<\/a> and the release of Harry’s memoir <\/a><\/span>Spare.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point, it’s become so personal,\u201d the source said. \u201cMaybe what they wanted wasn’t achieved, but at the end of the day, he’s going there to support his dad.\u201d They added that Charles is \u201cpleased\u201d Harry is attending.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMeghan wants to be there to support her father-in-law, but at the same time, the scrutiny she receives outweighs the support,\u201d they continued. \u201cThere’s always going to be that other side challenging their reasoning, and who wants to put themselves in that position?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A palace insider described the relationship between Harry, Meghan and the royal family as still \u201cstrained,\u201d something shown through instances such as Harry going to London<\/a> in late March to testify in court against the tabloids, but not seeing his family while there. Furthermore, reports suggested the couple were surprised and \u201cleft stunned\u201d when they were evicted from Frogmore Cottage<\/a> by Charles the same month, meaning they no longer have a high-security space to stay when in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for where Kate Middleton and Prince William stand, the couple has kept quiet throughout, but in a new book it’s alleged that doing the public walk alongside Harry and Meghan following the Queen’s death was particularly difficult for Middleton.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Our King<\/em> by royal correspondent Robert Jobson, Jobson alleges the photo-op in September was nothing but an \u201cillusion\u201d of unity and that the Princess of Wales, in particular, found it uncomfortable, describing it as\u00a0\u201cone of the hardest things\u201d she\u2019s ever had to
