Oprah Winfrey<\/a> wants Prince Harry<\/a> and Meghan Markle<\/a> to do whatever is best for them. The television legend made a guest appearance on CBS Mornings<\/em><\/a> with her longtime friend, co-host Gayle King<\/a> on Thursday, who asked Oprah what she thought about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attending King Charles III’s coronation<\/a> this May. (They just received\u00a0their invitations<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been reported that Harry and Meghan have received an invitation to the coronation,\u201d said King. \u201cDo you think they should go? Do you think they should not go? Is it something you\u2019d like to comment on? I\u2019m listening.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

While Oprah noted that the couple has not asked for her opinion on the matter, she replied, \u201cI think they should do what they feel is best for them and for their family. That\u2019s what I think. That\u2019s what the bottom line \u2013 it comes down to. What do you feel like is the right thing for you?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

King attended Markle\u2019s baby shower for Archie in 2019, while Oprah attended the couple\u2019s wedding in 2018. <\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this month, a spokesperson for the couple told\u00a0The Sunday Times<\/em><\/a>, \u201cI can confirm The Duke has received email correspondence from His Majesty\u2019s office regarding the coronation. An immediate decision on whether The Duke and Duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

In February, a palace insider reportedly told\u00a0People<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0the Duke and Duchess of Sussex<\/a>\u00a0will, in fact, be invited to the royal affair after months of tension and speculation. However, a source close to the couple has shared that they\u00a0had yet to receive an invitation at that time<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After taking a step back from their official senior royal duties, the Sussex family relocated to Markle\u2019s native California in 2020.<\/p>\n

In March 2021, Oprah\u2019s bombshell interview with the couple<\/a> aired. The Duke and Duchess detailed a lack of support, including security protection, and when Markle experienced thoughts of self-harm. Prince Harry alleged that an unnamed member of the royal family voiced \u201cconcerns\u201d over \u201chow dark his [Archie\u2019s] skin might be when he\u2019s born<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the interview, the couple’s Netflix documentary Harry + Meghan<\/em><\/a>, and the release of Prince Harry\u2019s bombshell tell-all memoir\u00a0Spare<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in January, tensions within the royal family have hit an all-time high, and there has reportedly been no advancement in mending fences.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0People<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0King Charles<\/a>\u00a0is anxious for the situation to \u201ccalm down\u201d before his ascension to the throne. A source close to the royals said, \u201cIt is such a momentous occasion for Charles, and he would want his son to be at the coronation to witness it. He would like to have Harry back in the family. If they don\u2019t sort it out, it will always be part of the King\u2019s reign and how he has left his family disjointed. He has had a reputation as a distant parent, and it would be awful for him for that to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the promotional tour for his book, Prince Harry sat down with ITV News\u2019 Tom Bradby for the feature,\u00a0Harry: The Interview<\/em><\/a>. The Duke explained, \u201cIt never needed to be this way<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want a family. Not an institution,\u201d said Prince Harry. \u201cThey feel as though it\u2019s better to keep us, somehow, as the villains,\u201d referring to the royal family. He added, \u201cThey\u2019ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Duke spoke about his relationship with his father, King Charles III, and his brother,\u00a0William, the Prince of Wales<\/a>. \u201cI would like to get my father back,\u201d Prince Harry said. \u201cI would like to have my brother back.\u201d<\/p>\n
