But season four, which was without a doubt the most anticipated so far due to the inclusion of Princess Diana&#8217;s storyline, kicked off with a bang, depicting Prince Charles meeting a young Diana Spencer in episode one and the beginning of Margaret Thatcher&#8217;s reign over the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Corrin, who plays Diana, and Josh O&#8217;Connor, who plays Charles, were the series&#8217; standout performances, with many wishing that the creators hadn&#8217;t pledged to replace the actors for next season, due to a jump in the characters&#8217; ages. But, if the rumors are to be believed, perhaps we won&#8217;t have to bid farewell to the pair just yet&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Below, everything we know so far about <em>The Crown<\/em> season five.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-h3\">Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth II<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton was confirmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/01\/the-crown-netflix-royal-drama-to-end-with-season-five-as-imelda-staunton-1202847789\/\"class=\"body-link\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/01\/the-crown-netflix-royal-drama-to-end-with-season-five-as-imelda-staunton-1202847789\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a> to be taking the reins from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in the series&#8217; final two seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">&#8220;I\u2019m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the Queen for the fifth and final season, taking\u00a0<em>The Crown<\/em>\u00a0into the 21st century,&#8221; creator and showrunner Peter Morgan said in a statement. &#8220;Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">Staunton also released a statement, which reads, &#8220;I have loved watching <em>The Crown<\/em>\u00a0from the very start. As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan\u2019s scripts. It&#8217;s likely that season five will continue along the 90s, covering events such as the divorces of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips&#8217; in 1992 and the 1996 breakups between Prince Charles and Princess Diana and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. Then, of course, in 1997, Princess Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-h3\">Emma Corrin might return for season five<\/h3>\n<p>After an incredible performance as Princess Diana &#8211; one that&#8217;s being dubbed the best portrayal of the late princess yet &#8211; <em>The Crown<\/em>&#8216;s creators are reportedly looking at ways to incorporate the British actress into season five through flashbacks to her younger years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181255\" style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width -width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-181255 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image.jpg\" alt=\"Emma Corrin The Crown\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"body-h3\">Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, kate middleton and prince william aren&#8217;t likely to be covered on <em>The Crown<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The show&#8217;s creators have said multiple times that they don&#8217;t want to bring <em>The Crown<\/em> into the present day, despite the young royals no doubt being the most interesting part of the monarchy. To avoid hitting too close for comfort, they initially toyed with the idea of stopping the series at season five, instead of six, but have since backtracked and said there will (thankfully) be another two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,&#8221; the show&#8217;s creator Peter Morgan told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/07\/the-crown-season-six-peter-morgan-1202981397\/\" target=\"_blank\">Deadline<\/a><\/em>. &#8220;To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day\u2014it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked about whether the young royals, such as Meghan and Harry, would be included in the show, Morgan told <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/2020\/01\/08\/the-crown-meghan-markle-prince-harry\/\"class=\"body-link\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-event-click=\"{\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/2020\/01\/08\/the-crown-meghan-markle-prince-harry\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in 2018, \u201cI feel uncomfortable writing about events within a certain time period. I think there\u2019s a certain amount of time within which, if you write about it, what you do instantly becomes journalistic. Because it\u2019s too close to the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\">He continued, \u201cLet\u2019s wait 20 years and see what there is to say about Meghan Markle. I don\u2019t know\u00a0<em>what<\/em>\u00a0there is to say about Meghan Markle at the moment. I wouldn\u2019t know and I wouldn\u2019t presume. She\u2019ll only become interesting once we\u2019ve had 20 years to digest who she is and what her impact has been.
