On Sunday night, Madonna<\/a> made an appearance at the 2023 Grammys<\/a>, taking to the stage to introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith<\/a>\u2019s performance. Despite the history-making moment \u2014 Petras became the first trans woman to perform at the awards ceremony (before later becoming the first trans woman to take home a Grammy) \u2014 many people instead focused on Madonna<\/a>\u2019s \u201cnew\u201d or \u201cchanging\u201d face, which began trending on Twitter in the hours following.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, taking to Instagram, Madonna has spoken out about the discourse surrounding her looks, calling out the conversation as another example of the \u201cageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 64-year-old music icon<\/a> began her post by expressing how disappointed she was that people were choosing to focus on her face, rather than the momentous occasion for her even being at the Grammys<\/a>: celebrating Petras and Smith’s work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an honor for me to introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith at the Grammys,\u201d Madonna wrote, before going on to explain initially she wanted to present the night\u2019s most prestigious award \u2014 Album of the Year<\/a> \u2014 but that ultimately she decided it was more \u201cimportant\u201d to present, Petras, “the first trans woman performing at the Grammys \u2014 a History making moment!! And on top of that she won a Grammy!! \u2665\ufe0f.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Madonna continued, \u201cInstead of focusing on what I said in my speech which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim \u2014 Many people chose to only talk about Close-up photos of me Taken with a long lens camera By a press photographer that Would distort anyone\u2019s face!!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
