(Photo by John Stoddart\/Popperfoto via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Prolific designer, punk provocateur, staunch climate activist, nonconformist, and a rebel with a cause, <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/vivienne-westwood-has-died-at-81\/\">Dame Vivienne Westwood died peacefully<\/a> at the age of 81 on December 29, surrounded by family and loved ones in Clapham, South London.<\/p>\n<p>Upon her death, Westwood\u2019s namesake label issued a statement. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/to-celebrate-her-80th-birthday-vivienne-westwood-releases-a-beautiful-book-celebrating-the-brands-40-years-of-shows\/\">Vivienne<\/a>\u00a0continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better,\u201d her brand wrote. \u201cShe led an amazing life. Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Westwood&#8217;s stance on climate change and sustainability has proven to be a priority in recent years. The legendary designer, and her sons and granddaughter have established The Vivienne Foundation, a nonprofit that will launch next year to \u201chonor, protect and continue the legacy of Vivienne\u2019s life, design and activism.\u201d It\u2019s designed on four pillars: climate change, stop war, defend human rights and protest capitalism and built to \u201ccreate tangible change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Designing alongside her husband of over 30 years, Andreas Kronthaler, the couple have managed to preserve the unabashed rebellion, and <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/vivienne-westwood-spring-summer-22\/\">stylish anarchy that originally put her on the map<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will continue with Vivienne in my heart,\u201d Kronthaler wrote in a statement. \u201cWe have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with. Thank you darling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Always known to push boundaries, politically, socially, and sartorially, Westwood\u2019s creative edge and embrace of the unorthodox has cemented her status as the grand Dame of fashion. (Images courtesy of Getty)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Westwood opened her boutique in 1974 with her then-partner Malcolm McLaren at 430 King\u2019s Road, in Chelsea, London. Though it\u2019s name changed throughout the years, it was focused on distressed designs, biker jackets, leather,\u00a0zippers and unapologetic tees (most notably the &#8220;God Save the Queen&#8221; T-shirt). Westwood kicked off the sartorial vision of the British punk scene when she began dressing musician Iggy Pop and the English punk rock band, the Sex Pistols (the latter of which McLaren managed).<\/p>\n<p>Catalysts of the punk movement, <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/fx-series-pistol-punk-fashion\/\">the Sex Pistols<\/a> were integral to the anti-establishment aesthetic that took hold in the \u201970s. In typically provocative Westwood fashion, the designer forgot she went without underwear that day, flashing her privates to photographers when spinning around in her charcoal gray tailored skirt suit. It\u2019s rumored that the Queen was humored by the moment. (Photo by Pool ARNAL\/GARCIA\/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/vivienne-westwood-spring-summer-22\/\">Vivienne Westwood<\/a>&#8216;s Fall\/Winter 1993 &#8220;Anglomania&#8221; collection, Linda Evangelista made her way down the London catwalk in one of her favorite designs she\u2019s ever worn.<\/p>\n<p>The supermodel told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CIxIqgz_IOA&amp;t=14s\" target=\"_blank\"><em>British Vogue<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;I mean, is there more talented than Vivienne?&#8221; Sharing the secret to walking in Westwood&#8217;s famously high platforms, Evangelista said, &#8220;When you wear shoes this high, you have to make sure your core is very developed, because it\u2019s all about your core, holding you up.&#8221; Fellow supermodel Naomi Campbell famously fell in her sky-high heels during this very runway show.<\/p>\n<p>Walking the runway in head-to-toe tartan, Evangelista said, &#8220;This look served full fashion. I loved it so much, that I own the look. Top to toe. After her ankles wobbled in the shoes, she landed on her rear and gracefully laughed it off. When Campbell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vl5IVo3EpCk\" target=\"_blank\">interviewed<\/a> Westwood in 2019, the supermodel asked the designer with a smirk, \u201cCan I ask you something? When I fell down, were you worried?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Westwood assured her that she knew she was okay, the designer explained, \u201cThe reason you fell is because you had these rubber tights on and your thighs caught together, so you wiggled on the shoe.\u201d She continued, \u201cYou\u2019ve only got to wiggle slightly, and you\u2019re over.\u201d Campbell added that there\u2019s trick to walking in Westwood\u2019s designs \u2013 you can\u2019t put too much weight on the heel and leaning on your tippy-toes is helpful. I was very lucky, actually.
