Margot Robbie<\/a> is just a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world. Warner Bros. Pictures finally released the official teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated Greta Gerwig<\/a> film, Barbie<\/em><\/a> on Friday, featuring Robbie as the beloved eponymous doll.<\/p>\n

The clip begins by showing sad-looking little girls on an island caring for their baby dolls as Richard Strauss\u2019 triumphant orchestral epic \u201cAlso Sprach Zarathustra\u201d (known as the 2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em> theme song) plays. A narrator dramatically reads, \u201cSince the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls, until\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Robbie appears styled the way the first\u00a0Mattel Barbie doll<\/a>\u00a0was in 1959. Clad in the very same white and black striped strapless one-piece bathing suit and peep-toe heels as the original model, Robbie pulled down her white-framed cat-eye shades to give the little girls a smile and a wink. The girls begin to destroy and toss out their old baby dolls as the teaser cuts to an ultra-glamorous, pink-washed world.<\/p>\n

The actress previously told\u00a0British Vogue<\/em><\/a> that playing such an iconic figure, \u201ccomes with a lot of baggage\u201d and \u201cnostalgic connections.\u201d However, she added, \u201cwith that come[s] a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear \u2018Barbie\u2019 and think, \u2018I know what that movie is going to be,\u2019 and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, well, maybe I don\u2019t\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The script was co-written by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach. Ryan Gosling<\/a> will star as Barbie\u2019s longtime boyfriend, Ken, while\u00a0Academy Award-winner Emerald Fennell<\/a>, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Hari Nef, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Alexandra Shipp and Robbie-lookalike,\u00a0Death on the Nile<\/em>\u2019s Emma Mackey are also set to appear in the LuckyChap Entertainment production.<\/p>\n

Gerwig opened up about the film on Dua Lipa\u2019s \u201cAt Your Service\u201d podcast<\/a>, expressing both excitement and terror about the project. \u201cIt was terrifying,\u201d said Gerwig. \u201cThere\u2019s something about starting from that place where it\u2019s like, \u2018well, anything is possible.\u2019 It felt like vertigo starting to write. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?\u2019\u201d She added, \u201cThat feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that\u2019s where the best stuff is. I am terrified of that. Anything where you\u2019re like, \u2018This could be a career-ender,\u2019 then you\u2019re like, \u2018OK, I probably should do it.’\u201d<\/p>\n
