Over the weekend Katie Holmes<\/a> single-handedly divided the internet when she appeared at the annual iHeart Radio Jingle Ball in New York City channeling peak 2000 style. She paired a bustier over the top of denim jeans<\/a> and topped it off with sneakers making a polarizing case for the old jeans and dress trend.<\/p>\n

Holmes’ personal stylist Brie Welch has since appeared in the\u00a0New York Times<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>where she shared the inspiration behind the viral look. “We decided the rich color and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans, creating a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there,” Welch told the publication.<\/p>\n

When it came to the sneakers, the stylist explained, “On the day of (and because Katie has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here), she said she wanted to wear sneakers, because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is more comfortable!)”<\/p>\n

She was wearing a Tove bustier (not a mini dress as we first believed), Reformation wide-leg jeans and Maison Margiela sneakers. She also wore a nose ring and was later spotted carrying a black APC cross body bag.<\/p>\n

Holmes has always had a knack for bringing an air of sophistication to even the most polarizing or tricky of trends. She sounded the return of the crochet dress<\/a> in June while making boho front row chic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She’s not the only style icon to bring back early 2000s style cues this season. Emily Ratajkowski was spotted at a glitzy Christmas event last week wearing a vintage Roberto Cavalli dress from the 2004 runway<\/a>. We’re talking velvet embellishments and dip-dye color.<\/p>\n
