Ever since the highly acclaimed series debuted in 2016, it\u2019s taken some creative liberties from time to time, despite heavily relying on history to guide its plot. As we tune into the drama &#8220;inspired by&#8221;\u00a0historical events,\u00a0<\/em>GRAZIA USA<em>\u00a0is unpacking every time we asked ourselves, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/the-crown-fact-or-fiction-mohamed-al-fayed-dodi-fayed\/\">Did that really happen?<\/a>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re focusing on <em>The Crown<\/em>\u2019s fifth episode \u201cThe Way Ahead.\u201d Prince Charles is faced with the consequences of a phone call with his secret lover Camilla Parker Bowles that was obtained and released to the public. (While he was still married to Princess Diana, mind you.)<\/p>\n<p>The episode opens with a snippet of the phone call in question. Prince Charles and Camilla discussed the layout of one of Charles\u2019 upcoming speeches while whispering sweet nothings to one another. The now-King of England, Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla did have their private phone conversation leaked in early 1993. The public dubbed the scandal \u201cTampongate\u201d and \u201cCamillagate.\u201d The intimate and explicit conversation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2022\/11\/the-crowns-controversial-tampongate-scene-vs-real-phone-call\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> took place in December 1989, while Charles was still married to Princess Diana and Camilla was still married to Andrew Parker Bowles, only amplifying the public\u2019s distaste for the situation. Not only did the transcripts contain graphic sexual content, but they also revealed that Charles and Camilla had pursued an extramarital affair for years.<\/p>\n<p>A transcript of the call was first published by an Australian magazine in January 1993. British tabloids quickly jumped on the bandwagon and began publishing as well. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1993-01-14-mn-1529-story.html\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1993-01-14-mn-1529-story.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Los Angeles Times\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>, the phone conversation was reportedly, \u201crecorded by an amateur radio buff who picked it up on high-tech scanning equipment in December 1989.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67588\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67588\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67588 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/11\/TheCrown_S05_Image_144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Crown Season 5 (Courtesy of Netflix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Charles, however, was not the only royal to have his privacy invaded during that period. In August 1992, <em>The Sun<\/em> published a front-page article detailing the existence of a private phone call between Diana and her close friend James Gilbey, heir to the namesake gin fortune. The public took to naming the scandal &#8220;Dianagate,&#8221; and most famously, &#8220;Squidgygate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While Princess Diana and Prince Charles were already separated at the time of the leak&#8217;s publication, they would go on to divorce in August 1996. Camilla and Andrew announced their separation in January 1995.
