Netflix\u2019s <em>Do Revenge<\/em> follows the expected tropes, while providing the genre with a much-needed fresh perspective. <em>Beware of spoilers ahead<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The movie&#8217;s stars are a part of some of the most popular teen series, and include <em><a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/stranger-things-season-four-teaser\/\">Stranger Things<\/a>\u2019 <\/em>Maya Hawke, <em>Riverdale<\/em>\u2019s Camila Mendes, <em>Euphoria<\/em>\u2019s Austin Abrams, and <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/alisha-boe-is-using-her-platform-to-effect-change\/\"><em>13 Reasons Why<\/em> actress Alisha Boe<\/a>. The film also features the ultimate teen queen, Sarah Michelle Gellar.<\/p>\n<p>Drea (portrayed by Mendes) has reached peak popularity at her posh private high school, even managing to ascend the fact that she\u2019s a student there on scholarship. Surrounded by <em>super rich kids with nothing but fake friends<\/em>, Drea has her priorities in order \u2014 she has her clique, her popular boyfriend Max (Abrams), a feature in the school newspaper, and her eyes set on Yale. She\u2019s got it all. But there\u2019s only so far you can rise without someone cutting you down.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64715\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64715\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/EN-US_DoRevenge_Main_27x40_Pre.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1896\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Do Revenge<\/em> Poster (Cr. Netflix)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Drea\u2019s utopian life goes up in flames after her boyfriend leaks her sex tape but claims to be the victim of a hacking. Enraged by his lies, Drea punches Max in the face, calling her scholarship into question and makes her smooth ride to Yale a bit bumpier.<\/p>\n<p>Starting a new school year without any friends, Drea meets the new girl, Eleanor (Hawke.) Kim Simms\/Netflix \u00a9 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The two forge a secret pact to get back at each other\u2019s tormentors \u2014 and Regina George-level scheming ensues. According to the streamer\u2019s synopsis, the film can be described as a \u201csubverted Hitchcock-ian dark comedy, featuring the scariest protagonists of all: teenage girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film also pays homage to iconic teen flicks that came before it, with Easter eggs that range from deliciously obvious to more subtle nods.<\/p>\n<p>Drea\u2019s paint fight with her crush Russ (Rish Shah) calls to mind the paintball kiss in <em>10 Things I Hate About You<\/em>, or the therapeutic balloon painting scene in <em>Princess Diaries<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64712\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64712\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64712 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/DO-REVENGE_UNIT_029_12282r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DO REVENGE &#8211; Camila Mendes as Drea in Do Revenge. Kim Simms\/Netflix \u00a9 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Eleanor arrives at Rosehill, she meets Gabbi, who provides her with a tour of the school cliques, much like Cher did in <em>Clueless<\/em>, and Damian and Janis did in <em>Mean Girls<\/em>. \u201cAs a disciple of the \u201890s teen movie, I would be offended if I didn\u2019t get one,\u201d quipped Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Drea\u2019s original clique reps their solidarity through metallic pastel bomber jackets and later inducts Eleanor with her very own, calling to mind the pink jackets of the \u201cPink Ladies\u201d in <em>Grease.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With cult-favorites like <em>The Heathers<\/em>, <em>Jawbreaker, Cruel Intentions, Clueless, John Tucker Must Die<\/em>, <em>Mean Girls<\/em>, and more embedded throughout the film, Robinson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2022\/09\/do-revenge-nineties-teen-movie-easter-eggs\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>, \u201cIf you put all of those things in a boiling pot and created a soup, I would hope that\u00a0<em>Do Revenge<\/em>\u00a0would emerge from the soup.\u201d She continued, \u201cI wanted to make a campy popcorn movie that does not live in reality.\u00a0<em>Do Revenge<\/em>\u00a0is a world unto itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64711\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64711\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64711 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/09\/DO-REVENGE_UNIT_027_07046r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DO REVENGE &#8211; (L-R) Maya Hawke as Eleanor and Camila Mendes as Drea in Do Revenge. But the fashion is better. And the music!? It\u2019s allllll Easter-egged here. <em>The Breakfast Club<\/em> vibes, updated!? I SWOON. This movie is an homage and it\u2019s the future and it\u2019s camp and it\u2019s so so achingly honest about what\u2019s hard and hilarious about how we try to fix
