Prince Charles<\/span><\/b><\/a> is planning major changes to the British monarchy when he becomes king \u2013 and will even \u201ctrim down\u201d the royal family to exclude his own brothers and youngest son. That\u2019s according to the latest episode of podcast “<\/span>The Firm: Blood, Lies and Royal Succession<\/span><\/b><\/a>,” released today, Tuesday, August 30.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the podcast, royal reporter <\/span>Richard Mineards<\/span><\/b> reveals that after acceding to the throne, Charles has radical plans for the thousand-year-old institution, amid concerns that the monarchy is increasingly seen as outdated and elitist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re going to have a much more defined, minimal, royal family given the vision of Prince Charles,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd that will not include people like <\/span>Andrew<\/span><\/b><\/a> and <\/span>Edward<\/span><\/b><\/a>. He wants the whole thing trimmed down.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He also believes that \u2013 perhaps most extraordinarily \u2013 Prince Charles\u2019 vision of this \u201cmore defined\u201d royal family does not include <\/span>Prince Harry<\/span><\/b><\/a> and wife <\/span>Meghan Markle<\/span><\/b><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo essentially, it’ll just be him and his wife <\/span>Camilla<\/span><\/b><\/a>, and then his son <\/span>William<\/span><\/b><\/a> and <\/span>Kate<\/span><\/b><\/a>, the Duke and <\/span>Duchess of Cambridge<\/span><\/a>, and their children,\u201d he tells the host of the podcast. \u201cAnd that will be essentially it, because Charles thinks that the British public is not ready for an expanded Royal Family. He realizes that the general feeling is, they don’t have the deference to the royal family that they might have had in the last 50 years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to make the whole idea more open, because there was always this risk, years back, about shining too much light into the Royal Family\u2026 But I think Prince Charles realizes that it has to be more open and also accountable to the British public.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After waiting over 70 years to take his place on the throne \u2013 making him the longest monarch-in-waiting in British history \u2013 Charles is keen not to be seen simply as a \u201cstop-gap\u201d between the <\/span>Queen<\/span><\/b><\/a> and his son Prince William.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Royal biographer <\/span>Jane Dismore<\/span><\/b>, author of <\/span>Princess: The Early Life of Queen Elizabeth II<\/span><\/i>, says that <\/span>although Charles has been preparing<\/span><\/a> for the crown his whole life, his personality may mean that he will find it difficult to adjust to the new role.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor a start, he’s never going to reign as long as she did because he hasn’t got the chance to, unless we discover the secret of eternal life in the next few years,\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo I think he won’t try to compete with that. But he’s <\/span>got to be careful because<\/span><\/a> he’s a very different personality to her. He is a bit more moody. He is more prone to looking inward, perhaps is more introspective than she is.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And author <\/span>Cele Otnes<\/span><\/b> says that this moodiness and introspection \u2013 as well as <\/span>Charles\u2019 insistence on doing things<\/span><\/a> his way \u2013 could ultimately backfire.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe’s done some things though that you’re not supposed to do as a royal,\u201d she says. \u201cHe has written some things that are political. He writes opinions about different economic activities… And he’s not supposed to do that. The monarch is not supposed to be politically involved, that’s Parliament’s role.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her view is echoed by royal reporter <\/span>Eloise Parker<\/span><\/b>, who tells the host of the podcast that regardless how popular his \u201ctrimming down\u201d of the royal family might be with the British public, Charles\u2019 political aspirations could prove a mistake.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think there’s a risk with Charles, that he’s a little bit more politically motivated than his mother,\u201d she says. \u201cThere’s always been a slight worry that Charles might dabble with the government a little more <\/span>than the Queen has<\/span><\/a>, which could become problematic as the nation’s king, where being apolitical is paramount to maintaining the popularity of the Royal Family.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
