(Photo by David M. Benett/Getty Images)

In the past, the high-end art world has been restrictive, preventing the majority of people from participating in collecting it. But for art collector Andy Valmorbida, he recognized that the internet and its assets can democratize high-end art and wants to encourage a much broader audience to enjoy and collect it through the generative process of digital art. Valmorbida is spearheading River-Labs, a new company in the Generative Digital Art Movement, offering many unique features, and maintaining his reputation for innovation.

Referred to as the “King of Pop-Up” by HuffPost, Valmorbida made a name for himself in the art world over the last two decades, first in New York and then globally. He curated and popularized street art, including the entire collection of Richard Hambleton, and is now exposing their work to the masses by allowing interested buyers to have unique digital as well as physical pieces. Other emerging artists in the genre who have also been represented by Andy include Retna and Futura, the American graffiti artist formerly known as Futura 2000.

Valmorbida foresaw the success and value of the genre. “I have believed for some time that graffiti artists who were able to make the transition to become fine contemporary artists would be the next major movement since the Pop Art movement,” he said. “I had this vision 12 years ago and today it’s a major movement with the likes of a Basquiat, Kaus, Banksky and Haring being highlighted artists in all major museums and auction houses.” Brands such as Giorgio Armani and Louis Vuitton have collaborated with graffiti/street artists like Richard Hambleton and Retna to bring their art to the public.

Valmorbida has organized over 45 pop-up exhibitions in 12 countries with a who’s who of partners, attendees and supporters in attendance that range from Giorgio Armani, an avid collector of Hambleton’s work, to P. Diddy, Jimmy Iovine, Mick Jagger, Alicia Keys, Pharrell, Paris Hilton, and companies including Bombadier Aerospace, Phillips, Vistajet. He formed a recent joint venture with digital platform Love Watts which boasts followers that include Jessica Alba, The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd, Cara Delevingne, Madison Beer and Gigi Haddid, to name a few.

Like many in today’s “gotcha” climate, the Australian-born and American-raised art collector and entrepreneur has faced controversy. But Valmorbida doesn’t want to look backwards, he’d rather address his present and future. “Any controversy has been settled favorably and I’m restricted from talking about it,” he says. “I’m excited about my new venture, River-Labs, and that is where my focus lies.”

Andy Valmorbida attends the private view of The Macallan Masters of Photography with Albert Watson at Phillips de Pury And Company on December 1, 2010 in London, England. With only $12,000 he began his art business which soon became a multi-million dollar venture. Valmorbida has a personal collection of over 400 blue chip original paintings by artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Yayoi Kusama, Frank Auerbach and, of course, Richard Hambleton. After Hambleton passed away, Valmorbida purchased all his intellectual property rights including the copyrights for all his artwork. With a recent feature in the New York Times, the Hambleton legacy continues to build momentum.

Valmorbida’s reach is not limited to the art world. He has also executive produced the documentary film Shadowman, reviewed by the New York Times as “a fascinating, harrowing film about his [Hambleton’s] life.” Negotiations are currently taking place to produce the story as a feature film. In addition, The Richard Hambleton: Godfather of Street Art by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida, a career retrospective featuring 200 Hambleton images, is due for publication by Rizzoli.

He’s also known for his philanthropy. According to Forbes, the entrepreneur founded the Richard Hambleton Foundation “which will focus on grants to art education.”

He is also a benefactor of AMFAR and has donated two rare artworks at the Cannes Film Festival Gala that raised $960,000. He donated a Mark Bradford painting, worth between $5-7 million today according to Forbes, to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and he created a grant for the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia, from which he hails. His new venture, River-Labs, will have its own non-profit to provide art education grants and opportunities for emerging artists. As the Village Voice wrote, “Andy Valmorbida is the storied art entrepreneur who focuses just as much of his energy on giving back as he does on pushing the boundaries of the art space.”

Valmorbida resides in New York City and Southampton, NY where he spends much of his time with his two young children.

Art Collector Andy Valmorbida Expands His Reach to the Digital Art World

<meta name="description" content="The heir to a billion-dollar fortune counts Jimmy Iovine, Alicia Keys, Mary Kate Olsen, Giorgio Armani, P.
