What I find super disappointing at the moment is that celebrities are lending their wide-reaching platforms to people who really need them \u2013 but, when amplified by the press, more often than not, the important conversations and messages are being lost in a land of click-bait.<\/p>\n

Case in point, Gigi Hadid had a really interesting chat with young activist Sophia Roe. Things they covered were ceremonial gestures, white saviourship and looking at things through privileged veils. Within six minutes, the pair has brainstormed ways to help black and brown communities outside of simply \u201cgiving money\u201d through a beautiful little anecdote about a woman in a flower shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always use this example of a woman in my neighborhood who has a flower shop,\u201d begins Roe. \u201cYou say you want to support her\u2026 so why not get to know this woman? [You will learn that she] lives in a brownstone right across the neighborhood, she\u2019s late on her property taxes, she lives with six other people. Wow, she might need some marketing help\u2026 or she might need some help with some social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it doesn\u2019t mean giving money!\u201d interjects Hadid. \u201cIt might mean helping with resources and connections that we already have from being privileged.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you create the trust between someone and they actually know that you\u2019re supportive of them, they will start to open up about what they need,\u201d Hadid continued. \u201cIf you\u2019re listening, you\u2019ll pick up on the things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hadid, 25, who is pregnant with her first child was answering some fan questions when one asked why she \u201cdidn\u2019t have a tummy.\u201d \u201cThis angle and the really baggy [Isabel Marant] jumpsuit make for an optical illusion. From the side it’s a different story,\u201d she jovially responded.<\/p>\n

A few hours later, British Vogue<\/a><\/em> decided to run with the headline \u201cGigi Hadid Reveals How She Disguises Her Pregnancy.\u201d The article acknowledges that Hadid and Roe talked about \u201cracial inequality, privilege and the anti-racist movement\u201d but that is as deep as it goes.<\/p>\n

Hadid wasn\u2019t having it.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisguise ….?\u201d she tweeted at British Vogue<\/em>. \u201cI said in a baggy jumpsuit the front and side views are visually different stories- not that that was intentional or I was trying to hide anything. Will be proud and happy to share ‘insight’ when I feel like it, thanks.”<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t mess. And let\u2019s get back to business. My particular favorite is the duo talking about cutting friends who have an inability to listen to another person\u2019s experiences at 43.05.<\/p>\n
