On August 10, fashion designer Betsey Johnson<\/a> celebrated her 80th birthday. With a remarkable 50 years in the industry, Johnson has racked up an impressive list of awards and memorable fashion moments through the years, and today her colorful punk designs<\/a> still hold longevity thanks to the return of Y2K trends. Gen-Z stars like Olivia Rodrigo<\/a> perfectly embody the Betsey Girl aesthetic (Rodrigo even wore Jennifer Behr x Betsy Johnson hair clips to the 2022 Met Gala).<\/span><\/p>\n

Staying true to her Leo zodiac sign, Johnson had to celebrate her milestone birthday in a big way. The designer looked to her archives to bring back some of her most iconic styles in a collection appropriately titled the Betsey Birthday collection. “This collection is a celebration,” Johnson told\u00a0<\/span>WWD<\/span><\/em><\/a> in a statement. “I think of it as my greatest hits album and a love letter to all of my past creations.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The collection itself, which was released on Monday, features the brand’s signatures like ’80s-era tulle tutu skirts, vintage-inspired lycra, and ’90s Mary Jane platforms, stilettos, and boots. Her quirky prints and bold florals make a comeback along with a Mark Mahoney-designed tattoo pattern and a Halloween-inspired spider motif printed on select garments throughout the range. Further playing into her kitschy whimsical designs, playful bags<\/a> shaped as a phone, birthday cake, and Champagne bucket complete the line-up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“This is a huge accomplishment in my life, and I can’t believe I made it this far,” Johnson said of her birthday. “I live every day to the fullest and have never felt so beautiful, energetic and optimistic for the future. Can’t wait for another 80 years.”<\/span><\/p>\n
