For all you styles historians out there, there’s a new fashion documentary in the works to put on your must-watch radar.<\/p>\n

According to The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, Scottish filmmaker\u00a0Kevin Macdonald is set to direct a new documentary on the controversial high-fashion designer, John Galliano.<\/p>\n

After taking the helm at Givenchy and Christian Dior and opening his own eponymous label in the 1990s, John Galliano was a force in the industry until the early 2010s, when he was suspended, then fired, from Dior in 2011<\/a> for making racial and anti-Semitic comments while at a Paris cafe. He later became the creative director<\/a> of Maison Margiela in 2014 after seeking treatment for his addictions.<\/p>\n

In a statement to WWD<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Macdonald said, “John Galliano is one of the great designers of our era and an icon of style and creativity for Londoners of my generation. I first started talking to him during lockdown 2020 about the possibility of making a film exploring his work, his-at times-controversial personal life, and the complexities of his cultural legacy.”<\/p>\n

Macdonald is an Academy Award-winning director has tackled documentaries about Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, and the 1972 Olympics called One Day in September<\/em> (which won him an Oscar), he’s also directed dramas such as The Last King of Scotland<\/em> and The Mauritanian. <\/i>While fashion may not be his main wheelhouse,\u00a0WWD<\/em><\/a> also reports that Anna Wintour is getting involved, along with Cond\u00e9 Nast Entertainment, to help connect the director to fashion contacts.<\/p>\n

Every few years there are fashion documentaries that come out that really make waves. Starting back with Isaac Mizrahi’s 1995 Unzipped<\/em>, to The September Issue <\/em>(2009), McQueen<\/em> (2018), Halston<\/em> (2019) and The Gospel According to Andre<\/em> (2017), these films are watched, referenced (and often frequently quoted!) by those in the industry for years to come. With the experience Macdonald will bring to the project, we’ll be keeping an eye on its release. According to WWD<\/em>, filming will complete in spring
